BHS Blood Donation Tips

Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood and more than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day. Many students get excited and nervous as the BHS Blood Drive gets closer on March 4. Participants both new and old must meet all health requirments when they arrive to the gym. Requirements such as having good hemoglobin and iron levels.

This coming week students can get prepared by including more high-iron foods such as red meats, spinach, beans, and raisens in their diet and avoiding substances that reduce iron absorption which improve  iron and hemoglobin levels.

Senior Morgan Lubben shares his experience last year stating, ” When I went to the gym I was very nervous. A nurse pricked my finger to make sure all my levels were good. After I overcame my fear of needles it was easy and felt good donating.”

On the day of donating it is important to:

  • Get a good night’s sleep.
  • Have a good breakfast or lunch.
  • Drink extra water and fluids.
  • Eat iron-rich foods – red meat, fish, poultry or liver, beans, iron-fortified cereals, raisins, and prunes.
  • Avoid fatty foods, such as hamburgers, fries, or ice cream before donating.
  • Wear clothing with sleeves that can be raised above the elbow.

Senior Anna Mason says, ” It’s kind of scary the first time you go but the red cross volunteers try to make you as comfortable as possible and I felt very good after donating to those who need blood.”
