Sven Harjacek: Looking at BHS from a new perspective

BHS is a school filled with diversity. For many students, this is their first year at BHS. Some of these students come from as close as St. Michael, where as some come from opposite sides of the globe. Senior Sven Harjacek is in his first year at BHS after making the journey from his home in Croatia, which is located in Europe just east of Italy.

First days at new schools can be hard for many people. It can be especially hard when coming from a completely different culture. “School is very different in Croatia,” said Harjacek. “There are many more people in this school, and there are a lot more classes you can take. Also our lunch is very different. We have open campus so we go to restaurants instead of a cafeteria.” In Croatia, the school day starts at 8:45 and goes until 4:25. The day consists of eight, forty-five minute periods instead of the four block system we use at BHS.

The legal driving age in Croatia is eighteen so not many students drive to school. “Most people have to take the bus to and from school,” said Harjacek. “The buses in Croatia are different though. We don’t ride schools buses. We ride the public buses that run through the city.”

“My first thought was that the school is pretty big,” said Harjacek. “My favorite thing about BHS is that everyone is nice.”
