As a new school year began, the newspaper came back with a brand new title. A school wide contest was held for the new name. The winner would receive a Palm Pilot.

“Even though I was on the editorial staff I wanted to be the one who came up with the new name. So when I went home I got out a sheet of paper and started listing all of the names that I could think of,” said 2005 graduate Jonathan Coward.

“I remember all of them being terrible. I decided to bring the name contest up to my mom, she always enjoys projects like that and it created a scenario for classic family competition. None of the ones we had come up with were “the one” until my mom said something with the word “hoof” in it. My mind clicked and out of my mouth came “The Hoofprint”, and that was it.”

Dozens of entries were sent in. When it came down to the voting Tatanka Times won by a point.

The newspaper staff threw out Tatanka Times as the winner, The Hoofprint was just a better fit for the paper. Now as the official name it has lasted one decade already.

“I have never felt good about a contest before but from the second that name fell from my lips I felt like it was just meant to be. I have always enjoyed the simplicity and the meanings implied,” said Coward.

Anti-Prom Students Make Different Plans https://www.hoofprint.net/anti-prom-students-make-different-plans/2013/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=anti-prom-students-make-different-plans Fri, 03 May 2013 17:15:41 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=15772 This Saturday on May 4th, 2013 students will be getting all dolled up for our annual prom. Not every Junior or Senior will be going though. Many who are not going don’t go because they simply don’t want to attend. Some students have planned their own get together instead of attending prom.

“I don’t want to go to prom because I can have just as much fun at my house without spending lots of money,” said Junior Erika Bordak.

Students like Bordak are considered anti- prom. This means they have different plans other than prom.

“I have dance rehearsal,” said Junior Megan LaFond. “If  I could go I would.”

Students have different reasons for why they don’t want to go to prom. Some just don’t like the idea of prom and others don’t want to spend the money. As for Junior Lillian Smith, prom just isn’t her cup of tea.

“I could go if I wanted to I suppose but its not really for me. I’m thinking it will be just a regular weekend for me,” said Smith.

The BEST week ever https://www.hoofprint.net/the-best-week-ever/2013/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-best-week-ever Tue, 23 Apr 2013 17:40:10 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=15666 Thanks to the unwelcome winter in April and MCA testing, seniors have had spent little time actually in school. With leaving early on Monday then having a late start on Tuesday and Wednesday, seniors were already in for an easy week. Then leaving early again on Thursday, and ending the week with a snow day made for the best school week ever.

“It was pretty cool. I got lots of sleep. I had friends sleepover for my birthday and then we went to school late,” said Senior Jojo Hesse.

This was a rare occurrence for Buffalo High School students, especially with the snow happening in April. With the weather already ruining the spring’s sports season this snow day may have been an uplifter.

“I played lots of Tennis. I wanted to hang out with my bud Eli but he’s grounded til summer. I miss him, it was the worst week of my life,” said Senior Adam Hartung.

After nine years of completing the MCA’s, seniors may of deserved this week.

“I slept in Tuesday and Wednesday morning because of MCA’s. With the early release on Monday I could have gone to work early but who would do that? Not me,” laughed Senior Kari LaPlant.

Now that snowstorm Zeuss came to Minnesota this week summer may never come. High hopes for a mild winter next year. The best week ever may never happen again.

Snow in April causing trouble for spring sports. https://www.hoofprint.net/snow-in-april-causing-trouble-for-spring-sports/2013/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=snow-in-april-causing-trouble-for-spring-sports Fri, 12 Apr 2013 19:20:12 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=15573 “All season this has been the worst for spring sports. Other years we have had periods in the spring where the weather has been unbearable but never this bad. We haven’t been able to even go outside yet. This is definitely frustrating when kids think all we do is sit inside and run, that is not what track is about ” Explains a frustrated Varsity track and field coach Scott Palmer “If we could be outside and do all the fun stuff that would be great. We want kids to have the real taste of Buffalo Track and field”

All this week athletes and coaches have been up in arms because the athletes sporting events have been getting canceled, “Next week isn’t too promising. Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday are options but it’s supposed to snow again next week.” states Palmer

Other sports like Boys lacrosse have had slightly more luck, “We’ve only been inside but the places we have had to play own turf so they just blew all of the snow off the turf field. But today we had a home game and it got canceled.” Says Junior Lacrosse player Wyatt Wentland

Through thick and thin athletes are dedicated to the sports they love, for instance yesterday morning and this morning the boy’s tennis morning have had practice at 6am before school.

Senior Ethan Fabel was one of these players, Fabel added with a sigh, “Yeah we had 6 am practice yesterday and today and we had to shovel off the tennis courts.”

Although Minnesota weather may be unpredictable the athletes of Buffalo high school know how to get down to business when times are tough.

Seniors Reactions to Graduation https://www.hoofprint.net/seniors-reactions-to-graduation/2013/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=seniors-reactions-to-graduation Mon, 08 Apr 2013 17:06:16 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=15507 “I’m excited [to graduate]. I am needed of a new change. Thirteen years of doing the same routine got a bit old. I’m excited for something new and fresh,” said Senior Julia Hogan.

About 400 students will be graduating from Buffalo High School on June 7th, 2013. Many Seniors have mixed emotions about heading off to college. On average 68% of Americans who graduate from high school go to college the following school year.

“I have been scared [about college] up until this point in life because I have lived a the same life, but, I’m excited to grow up and meet new people,” said  Senior Mandi Davidson.

Leaving for college is a big step, it’s closing one chapter and opening the next in your life’s story. Most are worried about leaving home when they are only 18 years old. College means making your own decisions, forming your future, and learning how to live on your own.

“I’m nervous but more excited to be independent,” said Senior Chandler Engle.

Decisions are the key learning experience in college. Either you regret them or you’re thankful for them in the future.

“I’m going to miss them [family]. I will only be five hours away from my family. It’s for the best,” said Hogan.

Snow Day on Monday Spring Break on Friday? https://www.hoofprint.net/snow-day-on-monday-spring-break-on-friday/2013/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=snow-day-on-monday-spring-break-on-friday Thu, 21 Mar 2013 19:04:56 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=15469 Buffalo experienced a snow day this past Monday March 18th. There was no Blizzard like conditions in Buffalo so many students wondered why the day was off. Buffalo is known for being the last to call

a snow day. Having two snow days in one school year is unreal let alone in just a mere two weeks. This was an especially, odd experience because starting Friday at the end of this week Buffalo is going on Spring Break.

“I wasn’t expecting school to be cancelled at all.” Said Senior Julia Hogan  “A two hour delay maybe, if that.”

Other students are just plain upset about the Superintendent’s decision.

“I don’t think the school board is consistent with their cancellations and thats not fair for the students.” Junior Jared Bjorkland

Students have different reactions to the snow day, “I mean I’ll take a snow day any day but now the teachers are cramming a lot in for the end of the quarter for the missed day, said Hogan.

Bjorklund is also upset because Lacrosse season has started. “The season began but we can’t even start to practice outside until the snow is off the ground.”

A Sisterhood Across an Ocean https://www.hoofprint.net/sisterhood-across-the-ocean/2013/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=sisterhood-across-the-ocean Mon, 11 Mar 2013 17:26:01 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=15298 On August 9, 2012, exchange students Meng-Hsien Lin and Raveerat Rojtavornpornsuk stepped off their plane into America. Lin, known as Violet to fellow BHS students, is from Taiwan. Rojtavornpornsuk, known as Eve to fellow BHS students, is from Thailand. Both girls will be here until June 15, 2013.

“My favorite part about America is the freedom. Back home, we have a lot of parental and governmental control,” said Rojtavornpornsuk. “I don’t like the snow though, and I don’t like McDonald’s very much.”

Both girls agree that the food in America isn’t very healthy and both have gained weight since arriving here. They also agree that the snow is a great aspect of Minnesota, but it’s not their favorite thing.

“One of my least favorite parts is how everyone burps out loud here. People in my country are like, ‘Oh sorry’, and here they just let it out,” said Lin.

In Lin’s home country of Taiwan, people fear that Americans are too racist. The people in Rojtavornpornsuk’s home country of Thailand, on the other hand, have a much different view.

“People in Thailand think Americans are cool because it’s a big country,” said Rojtavornpronsuk. “Everyone wants to be like Americans.”

Lin and Rojtavornpornsuk didn’t know each other when they stepped off their plane into Minnesota. Now they consider themselves sisters and will be in each other’s lives forever.

“I can tell her everything. We can share things,” said Lin.

“We’re like sisters,” said Rojtavornpornsuk.

Bison Cheerleading goes to Nationals in Orlando https://www.hoofprint.net/bison-cheerleading-goes-to-nationals-in-orlando/2013/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=bison-cheerleading-goes-to-nationals-in-orlando Fri, 01 Mar 2013 17:52:36 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=15189 The Bison Competitive Cheerleading Team competed at the National High School Cheerleading Championship in Orlando, Florida from February 8-12.

Near the beginning of the season, the Cheer Team was just shy of getting a bid to Nationals at the Regional competition. The team decided to try their shot at it again at a competition in Iowa. When they went to Iowa, they had their best performance yet. Finishing the meet off with a first place in their division and their own bid to Nationals.

“It took a lot of hard work and even more dedication than we already had. It also took quite a lot of money. We had to go to compete at regionals twice to get the bid to be able to go to nationals. The second time we went, we had to go to Iowa,” said Freshman Maddie Kramber.

Only a few weeks earlier at the State competition, they had placed for the first time in Bison Competition Cheerleaders history. There they earned a third place finish.

“We got to see the best of the best teams in the country. I have watched videos of these teams on my computer so it was really cool to see them in person with a new routine. The most memorable thing for me was being at magical kingdom with everyone. Being a senior and having been on the same team with almost all the same girls, makes them seem like family to you! So being at the place where your dreams come true with them, was amazing,” said Senior Captain Kassidy Duffney.

They placed somewhere between 25th-50th out of hundreds of teams. Even though they are unsure of how well they placed they know that this was an opportunity of a lifetime. When heading to Nationals it was more than a competition for these girls. It was everything they had ever wished for.

“Personally, I have taken a lot from the experience. I got to meet a lot of new people, and being able to go with my team made it ten times better. Having competed at the biggest high school competition in the U.S. makes me feel a lot more confident about our team, and our ability to achieve our goals. And being able to be a part of that team makes me feel better about myself being able to achieve things that I want and work hard for,” said Kramber.

Cheer is a team made up of middle school and high school girls. Four girls were lucky enough to finish off their high school career at Nationals. Hopes are high for future National opportunities.

“I loved that I got to end it at nationals. I made precious memories with people that I will never forget! If I could do it all over again, I would,” said Duffney

One Act’s controversial disqualification leads to rule change https://www.hoofprint.net/one-acts-controversial-disqualification-leads-to-rule-change/2013/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=one-acts-controversial-disqualification-leads-to-rule-change Fri, 22 Feb 2013 18:48:44 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=15045 In a controversial decision, Buffalo was disqualified from the One Act Play Sections on February  2. A week later at the State Festival, Director Tracy Hagstrom Durant found out that the rule that played a part in their disqualification is now being rewritten.

The play was originally disqualified for soliciting an audience response.

“It’s a good thing for the change,” Hagstrom Durant said. “Clarity of rules is always important. I felt bad for our kids, technically it’s my fault. I’m on the committee; I should know the rules. It looks like I don’t know them.

The rule is being rewritten so it is understandable and will not be misinterpreted. Another rule is also being changed so there will not be only two people deciding the fate of  our play.

“In its current state, I know they are trying to make an even playing field.”
