BHS Cribs https://www.hoofprint.net/bhs-cribs/2015/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=bhs-cribs Wed, 20 May 2015 17:24:34 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=19951 Lake Charlotte is one of the most popular location for students to go to not only in the summer, but also in the winter. It has been a privelege for Junior Hannah Studee, who has lived on Lake Charlotte her whole life.

“One of my favorite things to do is to go boating in the summer,” said Studee.

Lake Charlotte is more or less a residential lake. Seeing people tubing wake boarding and skiing on the lake is an everyday thing.

“I also really like to have friends over.” Studee owns a small cabin right next to her house. The cabin is mostly used for sleep overs when Hannah and her brother Sam have people over.

As well as Studee, Senior Madi Jewell has lived on lake Charlotte her whole life. Her house is more unique then most on the lake, with a full sand yard and the closest house to water.

“I like my house cause it what you picture a beach house to look like,” said Jewell.  The Jewells enjoy boating and having bonfires in the summer and in the winter months, the Jewels make an outdoor rink on the ice.

Many students also reside in Hanover and have to make the long trek to the high school.

Junior Cole Shuherk’s home is located in Hanover. Shuherk’s basement includes a popcorn maker, full kitchen, pool table, and a 100 inch screen projector hooked up with full cable. “I like living in Hanover cause a lot of my friend’s houses are in Hanover so sometimes it is easier living here, than if I was to live in Buffalo,” said Shuherk.

Dallas Perkins returns to haunt BHS lacrosse https://www.hoofprint.net/dallas-perkins/2015/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=dallas-perkins Wed, 20 May 2015 17:03:43 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=19957 The former BHS Lacrosse prodigy Dallas Perkins transferred to Orono this year for the sole reason of lacrosse.

With 26 points in arguably the toughest conference in Minnesota, the move has not been a disappointment for Perkins.

”I miss hanging out with my friends but I dont regret transferring to Orono,” Perkins said.

Perkins is currently 34th in the State in goals and is currently 2nd in points on a sizzling hot team. Although the Spartans record may not match the record of other teams with state championship aspirations, they do have one of the deadliest duos in High School lacrosse in Blake Leischow and Dallas Perkins. The lethal tandem has accounted for 67% of the team’s offense with 71 points and 51 goals.

“The opportunity to coach two kids with the kind of talent they have is always fun and makes you look forward to everyday coaching them.” Said by Len Riley the offensive coordinator for the Orono Spartans.

The Spartans are currently 3-0 in Conference play and 6-4 overall. The Bison faced off with the Spartans on April 18. The Bison came out of the game with a hot start but couldn’t seem to find the back of the net. At the end of the 1st half the spartans led 4-0.

The Bison limited Leischow to no goals in the first half but had no answer for Perkins Who had already netted  two goals. Although Leischow was limited to one goal the whole game, the Bison fell to the Spartans 13-1.

They seemed to fall apart in the second half allowing seven goals in the third quarter. And Perkins added two more goals to add to his game total of four goals along with one assist.

With losses to the state’s top teams of Chanhassen, White Bear Lake, Robbinsdale Armstrong and Blake, all four of the teams are currently ranked in the top 10 in Minnesota. The Spartans look to finish their season unblemished with a fairly easy second half of the season, playing against just one team ranked in the top 20 the until the playoffs.

Athletic Decline? https://www.hoofprint.net/athletic-decline/2015/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=athletic-decline Wed, 04 Mar 2015 20:10:21 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=19350 Buffalo has never blown away the State with its athletic programs. The school won its first athletic team State Title in 2007, beating Robbinsdale Armstrong in the class 4A basketball final. Two years later, Buffalo’s track and field team found its way to winning their first State Title in 2009. This is arguably the peak of Buffalo’s athletics winning two State Titles within two years.

At the same time, the school had a superb football team. Buffalo’s football team from 2007-2010 posted an impressive record of 23 wins and 6 losses. Although the team never made a State Tournament appearance, they came remarkably close in back to back years. Losing to Brainerd 33-20 and St. Cloud Tech 39-21 in the Section Championship both years.

With 11 Mississippi 8 Conference Championships over the course of 4 years,  Buffalo seemed to be on the verge to becoming the conference powerhouse.

However, in 2010 Buffalo started to add more sports to its athletic program.  When these sports became available to students, there was one sport in particular that stood out. Lacrosse seemed to soar among all other sports.

Junior Dallas Perkins has found a plethora of success in lacrosse, already receiving emails and letters from Division I schools.

“I was interested in lacrosse because it is kinda like a mix of hockey, football and soccer.”

Students like Perkins are more common than you may think. Although they may not share the same success as the “lax god” of BHS. Students are starting to choose to only participate in one sport.

“I dont play any other sports anymore because I dont want to get hurt and in hockey and football people always get hurt,” said Perkins, when asked why he only plays lacrosse.

Perkins older brother Austin Perkins was a 3 sport athlete at BHS playing hockey, football and lacrosse. Having 3 sport athletes was a lot more common 5 years ago then it is today. So now the question becomes, has there really been an athletic decline?

In my opinion the athletes at BHS haven’t gotten worse. I think it has more to do with athletes having many more options in what they want to participate in. Students are starting to choose one sport and playing year round in that particular sport, instead of competing year round in 2 or 3 sports. For this reason we have seen a recent downfall in certain sports, such as football. The number of kids trying out for the team has drastically dropped, virtually seeing the whole junior class quit. The football team didnt even have enough students to have junior varsity team. The junior class is considered to be the best class of lacrosse players in school history. Taking to former football player Max Hershley “I quit football to play for the Minnesota Loons in the fall this year.”

Lack of enthusiasm in boys winter sports? https://www.hoofprint.net/lack-of-enthusiasm-in-boys-winter-sports/2015/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=lack-of-enthusiasm-in-boys-winter-sports Tue, 10 Feb 2015 18:11:58 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=18951 “School Spirit” seems to have disappeared in the BHS student section this year. The scarcity of enthusiasm this year makes the student section almost seem lifeless.

In past years, the student section has roared with excitement, rocking the building. Fans have seemed to have lacked that sort of excitement of roaring chants or Super Fans.

”We don’t have that shock and awe factor we have had in previous years.” junior defefensemen Michael Sawdey.

Fans this year have seemed distant or inattentive at games, rather making post game plans or deciding to leave to the game early. Sometimes, fans simply don’t show up at all, which has been the case for this year’s boys basketball team.

With what has seemed to be a disappointing season this far the boys basketball team has received little support from the students of BHS. After coming off a State Tournament appearance you would think that fans would be wired for the season to begin.

“I think we deserve every bit of the lack of attendendance at our games. We need to put on a people want to see and unfortunately we haven’t been able to do that,” said senior Cory Thielman.

“Our student section varies game to game, but when there are a lot of students present I believe I believe it makes the game more exciting,” said by senior Dan Holland.

The last two weeks the hockey team has seen a growing student section coming to games.

“The more fun we have with it, I think more people will come to the game,” Holland said.

Junior Max Hershley has seemed to spark the student section this year by bringing an assortment of signs and props to the games. His favorite sign so far has been a giant cutout of his favorite two players, or his customized  mannequin.

“I started bringing signs and stuff cause are hockey team needed some support,” Hershley said, “and our student section was lacking enthusiasm.”
