Passion Series: Rebecca Kohnen https://www.hoofprint.net/passion-series-rebecca-kohnen/2015/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=passion-series-rebecca-kohnen Mon, 01 Jun 2015 17:07:01 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=20098 A new-found hobby is always exciting, but usually only lasts a couple of years or so. Senior, Rebecca Kohnen found her hobby in 7th grade but for her, it’s more than just a hobby. Photography is her passion.

“I started getting into photography when I was in 7th grade. My class at my old school, Salem Lutheran, took a trip to Washington DC. Every single day we were there I had to buy a new memory card because i was taking so many pictures,” said Kohnen

Going on that trip was the point when Kohnen realized photography is something she wants to continue with, and be successful in.

“The minute I got home, I sat and went through every picture and edited them. That’s when I first realized I wanted to be a photographer,” explained Kohnen.

As time went on, Rebecca’s passion for photography didn’t fade. She had her mind set on continuing to take and edit pictures.

“When i got into high school the first thing I did was ask my counselor if there were any photography classes. My sophomore year i took visual tech and my junior year I took yearbook. In yearbook my junior year I would take pictures whenever I had the chance. The summer after my junior year I took a few of my friends senior pictures and also my own. Then during my senior year, McCallum made me and four others the photography editors on the 2015 yearbook staff, with that I got the chance to take so many pictures and learn new techniques from the other photographers,” said Kohnen

Rebecca also has plans in mind for her journey with photography after high school.

“This summer I am doing an online photography program through the New York Institute of Photography and I am working on getting a studio,” explained Kohnen.

Kohnen’s journey with photography shows that when you find something you’re passionate about, go for it. It doesn’t always come easy though. Often times people spend the majority of their lives looking for that specific thing they enjoy more than anything else. But if you set your mind to it, the thing you’re passionate about can become the thing you do everyday.

Student Council and Tatanka Yearbook prepare for Student Appreciation Day https://www.hoofprint.net/student-appreciation-day/2015/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=student-appreciation-day Thu, 21 May 2015 16:38:52 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=20001 Student Appreciation Day is an annual tradition that occurs on the last Friday of the school year. On this day, the student body is celebrated along with the coming of a long awaited summertime. Each year, the Student Council and Yearbook make small changes to the previous year to make the day unforgettable.

“We’ve been preparing for Student Appreciation day for a while, we have to find a list of teachers to work at each area, order things, and find bands to perform. It’s a lot of work, and we’ve been working hard on it. It’s fun to plan though, and an exciting day,” explained Student Council member Allie Palmer.

This year, the food service will provide the school’s top lunch choices voted on by the student’s; Cheese Sticks with Marinara and French Toast Sticks.

“We make a larger quantity of food than on normal days. It’s a really fun day for us, we enjoy it,” explained Katie Lohse a lunch lady at BHS.

As always, the lunch periods will be lengthened and time spent in the classroom will be shortened.

“A&B and C&D lunches are combined. Students are excused at 1:30 for a short assembly, followed by an ice cream social and student music in the cafeteria gym,” explained Assistant Principal Kris Thompson.

Not only is Student Appreciation Day a time to celebrate and to enjoy music produced by various student groups including two freshman groups and one senior group , but it is also yearbook distribution day.

“The yearbook staff gets out of first and second block to go set up the PAC and prepare for everyone to come in and get their books. It’s really fun to see everyone looking at the book at lunch because everyone is on a different page, and saying something different about it. We get to see them early, and it’s really cool to see all our hard work put together,” explained yearbook member Tommy Peterson.

Student Appreciation Day will take place on May 29th throughout the school day. It will be a fun day of entertainment and a recollection of memories for the 2014-2015 school year

BHS’ Top 5 Summer Destinations https://www.hoofprint.net/bhs-top-5-summer-destinations/2015/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=bhs-top-5-summer-destinations Fri, 15 May 2015 21:07:18 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=19889 BHS students are making their mark on the globe this summer. Students are traveling across the ocean to Europe and South America, and exploring what western America has to offer. This summer, a large number of students will get the opportunity to travel and add unforgettable memories and experiences to their life.

1. Peru

Peru is a small country located on the Pacific Coast of South America. It offers a variety of landscapes and cultural experiences including the Andes Mountain Range, beaches, and of course, it was once home to many indigenous groups including the most well known, Incas.

“I’m going to Lima, Peru, I’m excited to experience somewhere completely different from anywhere I’ve ever been,” said Junior Emma Maxson.

2. Alaskan Cruise

Alaska is not a state many American’s ever live in or visit. Despite Alaska’s massive size, according to the US Census Bureau, there are only 736,732 residents.

“I’m going on a Carnival cruise ship, We are stopping at 3 Alaskan cities and at Victoria, Canada,”said Junior Abby Munsterteiger.

3. Spain Trip

Every other year, the BHS Spanish Department takes a trip to a location with vast Spanish heritage. This summer, the department is headed to Spain, including its capital, Madrid.

“I’m nervous and excited to meet my two different host families,” said Junior Catie Purcell.

4. Colorado

When the Rocky Mountain range in Colorado isn’t completely covered in snow during the summer months, the state continues to utilize the natural beauty of the state. The summer months bring a time of water activities and tours of the mountains by horseback, ATV’s, and gondolas.

“I am eager to visit my dream college, Colorado State,” said Junior Hannah Anderson.

5. California

California has always been known as a getaway destination for Americans. It holds the second most populous city in America, Los Angeles. California’s location on the Pacific West Coast allows the summer months to be filled with good surf, and an endless abundance of beaches.

“I’m really excited to go see my family down there, and visit places I’ve never seen before,” Junior Paige Dalbec.

A Different Season https://www.hoofprint.net/19818/2015/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=19818 Fri, 08 May 2015 17:11:42 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=19818 The Buffalo Boy’s Lacrosse season started off with a bit of a slow start. With seven games down, the boys are 3-4 so far. They started off the season with a win against Hutchinson on Monday, April 13th. Following their first win, the team suffered a four game losing-streak against Rogers, Orono, and Delano. It seems to be looking up though, Buffalo won two in a row on Thursday, April 30th and Tuesday, May 5th, beating Monticello and Delano. Even though the season isn’t exactly what players had in mind so far, positive attitude is still present in the minds of the athletes.

“I’m predicting we win up the rest of the season,” said Junior Max Hershley

Many students say this season isn’t as challenging compared to last year, due to the change in coaching staff. Joey Hartfiel takes the position of head coach for the boys this year, replacing last year’s coach, Larry Hunter.

“The ideas this year are different than what we’ve had the past couple of years, it’s been a little challenging adapting to a different style of play,” said Senior Mario Eiden

Some say this season isn’t as “hardcore” as it has been in the past. Previously, Hunter had a hard time letting his players accept defeat. He made sure to push and run the boys at the next practice when they didn’t have their best game. Hunter made a point to change the way they played to ensure that they wouldn’t play like that again. New head coach, Hartfiel has a bit of a different perspective on the game. Hartfiel isn’t as intent on penalizing for bad games, and after the loss of four games, the practices didn’t really change that much. He focused more on the games ahead and left the past games behind.
With six games left, the boys hope to get in some good wins and have a strong finish to the season.

Winter is… Over? https://www.hoofprint.net/winter-is-over/2015/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=winter-is-over Fri, 27 Mar 2015 19:18:24 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=19532 Most Minnesotans are used to the bipolar temps that happen all year round and tend to get a little too excited when some warm weather rolls around. It is no shock that one weekend the high will be 70 degrees and the next weekend it’s snowing. Sunday, March 15 welcomed a shocking high of 66 degrees and even 70 all across the state. Everyone was asking “will this last?” Some hopes seemed to have shattered the weekend after (Sunday, March 22nd) when the high was 30 degrees and.. SNOW? The first day of Spring was Fri, March 20th, and snow is not what most people had in mind.

“I hate the snow, it makes my hair wet,” said Freshman Abby Serbus

Many other students are feeling the same way at this time of year. Good news though, it looks to be like that was (hopefully) the last snowfall of the season, which is much better compared to last year when we still saw traces of snow as late as May, 28th. The forecast seems to be looking up from here, with temps warming up during spring break. The Tuesday of spring break shows a high of 68 and sunny, while the low for the week is an estimated 46 degrees. Many students can’t wait to break out the shorts and sandals, and it looks like we are getting closer.

Single vs. In a Relationship: Student Perspectives on Valentine’s Day https://www.hoofprint.net/single-vs-in-a-relationship-student-perspectives-on-valentines-day/2015/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=single-vs-in-a-relationship-student-perspectives-on-valentines-day Fri, 13 Feb 2015 18:20:04 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=19036 It’s that time of year again… February, 14. The either dreaded or anticipated day. It’s when flower shops and candy stores increase their sales,  it’s when people of all ages confess their feelings for each other, and young kids stay up late making a little treat for each student in class. Does all of this seem too mushy, or is it special and memorable?

Single students perspectives:

“I think it’s a dumb holiday because obviously i’m gonna be alone for life,” said Freshman Hannah Therrien

“I’m neutral, i’m not one of those Valentines Day haters or anything,” said Junior Paige Newman

“It’s not necessarily a bad thing because couples can show their affection and appreciation towards each other,” said Junior Zach Jans

“I don’t have anyone so I don’t have plans and those candy hearts with messages on them taste bad,” said Junior Luke Boyle

“I just like it because chocolate is cheap the next day,” said Freshman Averi Linz

In a relationship students perspectives:

“It’s stupid. If you love someone you should show them everyday of the year” Said Senior Jordon Landsberger

“I have plans on Valentine’s Day but he won’t tell me anything, it’s a surprise and I am expecting a lot from him.” Said Junior Austyn Walker

I think it’s kind of pointless because you should always be showing someone you love them and be treating them special, not just one day,” said Junior Kirsten Deladi

It’s just a made up holiday,” Said Senior Shianne Kempel

Starts Job With Three Days of Notice https://www.hoofprint.net/starts-job-with-three-days-of-notice/2015/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=starts-job-with-three-days-of-notice Thu, 05 Feb 2015 18:15:39 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=18760  Each year at Buffalo High School it seems as teachers come and go. Some retire, some go on to do other things, and others are coming in looking for a new opportunity. Recently, we welcomed new World Studies teacher Katie Borchert. Borchert was hired on January 16, 2015, she started her job three days later, on the first day of 3rd quarter.

“I was extremely nervous especially since I got hired the Friday before,” said Borchert.

Luckily, this was not Borchert’s first experience in a new school. Borchert has previously taught in Anoka, St. Michael- Albertville, and a Junior High in Burnsville. It comforted Borchert coming in to BHS due to the fact she had known Social Studies teacher, Mike Curry ahead of time. Along with previously knowing a colleague, Borchert is also glad to have World Studies teacher, Gerard Rohl as a mentor.

“It is nice to have someone to help me get started,” said Borchert.

Each day Borchert makes the trip from Minneapolis to Buffalo. She is glad to come to a place with so many friendly staff and students.

“I am excited to have found a home to teach at,” said Borchert.

With just a little over 4 months left of this school year Borchert is ready for days ahead.
