You know the name. Erickson is a widely known substitute teacher at Buffalo High School. He is a fan favorite for most students due to his friendly, down-to-earth persona. Students say he makes the time to get to know them when he is leading classes.

With that being said, BHS students shared their thoughts about the Legend himself.

“He’s chill,” Sophomore Camden Hegna said. “He’s super nice and kind. He’s a very helpful guy.”

Junior Carter Jerde also enjoyed having Erickson as a sub.

“He’s a beauty, very intelligent man,” Jerde said. “He’s a great sub and teacher. He really helps us learn.”

Kaden Stubstad, Junior, had a very positive input about Erickson.

“I love him,” Stubstad said. “Every time I see that he’s my sub, my spirits go up. It makes me happier. Not only is he a good sub, but he’s also a good man.”

Erickson reflected on his past as well. He was a teacher at BHS for 40 years. He taught sociology and world studies and was also a basketball and baseball coach. He still coaches football to this day.

Erickson started subbing right after his teaching career ended. He retired in spring of 2008 and began subbing in fall of 2008. Not much of a break for Erickson.

“I started subbing because school has always been a good place to go,” Erickson said. “I like being a part of it. The students are fun and idealistic. I had a lot of teacher friends too. I enjoy it.”

For Erickson, the thing he enjoys most about subbing is the interaction with the different people and classes he teaches.

“Subbing is a diversity,” Erickson said. “Rather than teaching one class, I get to teach in different areas, and see how teachers work with different kids. I learn something every day.”

He has substituted for every subject except band and choir. He liked subbing social studies and physical education the most, but his favorite is American and World History. “That’s where I can find out things about the past and connect them to today,” he said.

As stated earlier, he still coaches ninth grade football. He got into football because he’s always been a fan of the game. He played football at Augsburg University and keeps his knowledge for his ninth graders.

“I played in college. I’ve always enjoyed the sport. The camaraderie you gain is awesome,” he said. “You gain respect for the people who kick the crap out of ya.”

He also loves the strategy behind football. Making and calling plays is a great pleasure to him.

“I like designing plays. I was a defensive coordinator here (at BHS) for 35 years,” he said. “I like the strategy. I also love seeing the kids grow. Telling them to do something and then they go do it, is awesome to me.”

Mr. Erickson is a very popular man among the people of Buffalo, especially in athletics and teaching. The impact he’s left, and the joy he still brings to everyone is remarkable. With this school year marking the 50th year with Erickson teaching in some form some might wonder when he’s gonna give it up, let’s hope he never does and keeps bringing a smile to kids faces as the legendary sub.

Riley Habisch: Bison Hall of Famer https://www.hoofprint.net/riley-habisch-bison-hall-of-famer/2019/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=riley-habisch-bison-hall-of-famer Thu, 23 May 2019 17:26:46 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=24743 Riley Habisch and Sarah Burke were recently inducted into the Buffalo High School Hall of Fame. For Habisch, his hard work in the classroom and character have led him to receive this award.

Every year the Buffalo High School picks five boy nominees and five girl nominees for the Hall of Fame. BHS Teachers then vote for one boy and one girl to be in the hall of fame of Buffalo High School and get their pictures on the wall in the front entrance forever.

“To get nominated, I just had to be myself,” Habisch said. “I didn’t specifically change myself for the award. I was just a good student and good person.”

Being announced as a candidate, and ultimately winning the prized award, was a very special moment for Habisch.

“I was pretty honored to be announced,” Habisch said. “Being with all those other candidates was cool. They’re all great people.”

Habisch did not expect to be nominated for the award, let alone to win it.

“I didn’t know if I would get it,” he said. “There was a lot of people out there doing great things. I was just happy to be nominated.”

A lot of people are great students, and even better people. But being even more than that, is what this award recognizes. Riley had some great advice for the next class to come.

“All of the other winners and candidates were hardworking people,” Habisch said. “I mean, find your passion, work hard at it, and have fun with it.”

Those three steps to success can lead to great things. Riley Habisch (and Sarah Burke) have clearly done both. That’s why they were chosen the two most fit to represent this award.

Nicknames of Buffalo High School https://www.hoofprint.net/nicknames-of-buffalo-high-school/2019/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=nicknames-of-buffalo-high-school Wed, 08 May 2019 17:49:23 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=24569 Junior Trevor Johnson got his popular nickname from his brother teasing him.
“My brother thought I was fat and had belly rolls,” he said. “So he combined it with Trevor and bam: Trolls.”

Are you called by your actual name? Or is there a different name that everyone knows you by? Buffalo High School students were recently asked about their nicknames.

Junior Michael Tweten got his nickname simply from his last name.

“My last name is Tweten so people started calling me Twetey. It started in Elementary School.” He said.

“My nickname is C-Jack, you already know. Mr.Ortmann gave it to me in seventh grade.” Freshman Carter Jackson said.

Junior Nolan Budig has a good nickname to look back on, “Me and my My neighbors, Tony and Nate Dahl, made it up in their driveway. I call him Ton and he calls me Non. We don’t call each other that anymore, but it is a good memory.”

“Drake Grrs . Tony (Dahl) and Matt (Willert) were saying random stuff in basketball practice and then they said my two names meshed as one,” said Junior Drake Gorres.

“People started to call me a meathead in 10th grade when I started to get really strong”, said Junior Dustin Sarvie.

Whether it be something that sticks with you for a lifetime and becomes apart of you, or if it has a nostalgic feeling having a good memory, nicknames can be an important part of everyone’s life.

Is your BHM School Email Useful? https://www.hoofprint.net/is-your-bhm-school-email-useful/2019/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=is-your-bhm-school-email-useful Wed, 01 May 2019 18:13:43 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=24500 Are school emails useful? Does it benefit you to have one? Students of Buffalo High School were recently asked.

Many said Yes, others said No.

“Yes, it’s useful so the school can see what kind of stuff you got going on,” Junior Carter Jerde said.

Junior Jared Kohnen agrees. “I need to get emails from teachers,” he said.

Junior Kaden Stubstad thinks an email specific to school is nice to have.

“It is convenient and efficient to have a seperate email for school,” he said.

Many people like having a email for assignments, surveys, and other information and opportunities that get emailed to you.

Others don’t believe a school email is needed, like Freshman Evan Soefker and Sophomore Gabe Bursch.

“It’s not useful to me because I never really check it,” Soefker said. “I check it like once a week.”

Gabe thinks they are useless. “No, it’s not useful. It’s pointless. When do you use your email? Besides when teachers send you stuff?” He said.

School emails help some students, and others simply don’t have a need or want for one.

Do you think school emails are useful?

Day on the Farm: Evan Duske https://www.hoofprint.net/day-on-the-farm-evan-duske/2019/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=day-on-the-farm-evan-duske Thu, 28 Mar 2019 18:16:12 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=24188 Living on a farm makes for a tough, hard working, long schedule everyday. Junior Evan Duske lives this life every day on his farm in Montrose.

The Duske farm has 60 dairy cows to tend to, but 300 overall with young stock and steers. They also have two bulls, to breed with other females. Just hearing that, it sounds like a lot of work to keep up on.

“My uncle usually milks the cows in the morning, but he’s on vacation right now,” Duske said. “So lately I’ve been getting up at five-thirty in the morning to milk and feed them. I milk thirty cows, my dad milks the other thirty. We milk every night as well.”

Evan starts off his day by getting up at 5:30 and driving to his grandparents’ farm, as that is where he milks cows. His grandparents’ house is about a mile down the road. He milks until about seven forty-five, then heads back to his house. Then he showers and eats breakfast until eight twenty. He then leaves for school.

After school, he needs to milk his share of cows once again which takes him about an hour and a half. He doesn’t name his cows but instead they each have a tag with a number. Once he gets home from school at around 4 o’clock, he chills for a little bit and has a snack. Once he is done with his afternoon snack, he relaxes before his night of work. He feeds the cows again at about five fifteen.

“I get home at four, eat some snacks, chill till a little after five, then go feed the cows,” Duske said “Once I am done milking at around seven thirty, we might have to feed a newborn calf.”

After his final milking, that concludes the daily schedule of Evan Duske in the winter. The next day, he’s up at 5:30 to do it all again.

As Evan has dedicated a huge chunk of his life to being on the family farm, it affects his school life as he chooses to devote his time to working rather than participating in after school activities.

“I realized I didn’t have a future in high school basketball so I decided to start more time into the farm”, Duske said. “The farm has become my future.”

Twitter or Instagram? https://www.hoofprint.net/twitter-or-instagram/2019/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=twitter-or-instagram Tue, 19 Mar 2019 19:31:17 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=24063 Americans spend most of their waking hours looking at a screen. Adults spend an average of 11 hours a day on some type of social media, that’s almost half the day!

Social Media sites are taking over our lives. Two of the most popular sites/apps are Instagram and Twitter. Both are sites where you can post pictures, videos, and just your overall thoughts. Instagram is strictly pictures and videos, and Twitter is all the above.

So, with that being said, 107 Buffalo High School students were recently asked which they like better, Instagram or Twitter?

One-hundred of those students said they enjoy Instagram better.

Twitter or Instagram?

Junior Kaden Stubstad likes the way Instagram is set up. “It is easier to use, and presented better. Twitter is an old fad,” he said.

Junior Olyvia Boyum likes how she can keep up with her friends. “You interact with friends more,” she said. “And see what they are doing.”

Junior athletes Aidan Bouman and Brandon Maatz look at from a recruiting aspect.

“I like them both. Twitter is for popularity and recruiting, while Instagram you can look at funny pictures and videos.” Maatz said.

“Instagram is better because there is more interesting things on there than Twitter. Twitter is basically just for recruiting. Instagram is actually fun.” Bouman said.

Junior Nolan Budig likes both for one specific reason each. “I like Rob LaPlante’s Twitter, and I like couples on Instagram,” He said.

Freshmen Bri Bluiett and Will Poole like the comedy part of Instagram.

“I like it because it has good memes,” Bluiett and Poole both said.

Now onto Twitter. Two of its seven votes belonged to Junior Greta Goede and Sophomore Ethan Hansen.

“You get more information about what’s going in life, while Instagram is more about peoples personal lives.” Hansen said.

Greta Goede thinks Twitter causes more laughter. “It’s way funnier. Plus you can post whole videos, you can’t do that on Instagram.”

On Twitter you can post multi-minute long videos. On Instagram you can only post videos up to a minute long. However, on “IG TV,” you can post videos longer than a minute (about a minute and a half).

Social Media is taking over the world. Will you fall into the trend? Or will you limit your online use and enjoy the real world?

What are the Favorite Netflix Shows at Buffalo High School? https://www.hoofprint.net/what-are-the-favorite-netflix-shows-at-buffalo-high-school/2019/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=what-are-the-favorite-netflix-shows-at-buffalo-high-school Fri, 15 Mar 2019 18:09:12 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=23759 Television is a huge part of everyone’s life. On average, Americans watch about four hours of TV a day. That is 28 hours a week. For Buffalo High School students, the majority of that time comes from watching shows on Netflix and other streaming services.

All people have different preferences when it comes to watching TV.

Junior Justin Ellis loves the comedy Big Mouth, and Junior Jenna Palmer (and many others) love The Office. Junior Derek Bursch likes Trailer Park Boys, just as the whole football team does.

What is your favorite Netflix Show?

A lot of students also like The Ranch, a comedy about a family on a ranch, hence the name.

“I like The Ranch. It’s good and it’s funny,” Sophomore Matthew Czeck said.

Juniors Tony Dahl and Trevor Johnson also like The Ranch, along with many other shows.

Trevor Johnson and Junior Kaden Stubstad like Friends. It is a comedy about six friends who live in New York City. Some people love it, others hate it and think it is overrated.

“It gives me nostalgia,” Stubstad said. “It’s dumb-funny.”

Counselor Mark Jones likes the British drama Peaky Blinders. His wife is a big fan, so he support her and watches it with her.

“I watch it with my wife,” Jones said. “She likes it.”

Junior Julia McAlpin likes the mature show Parenthood. It is more of an adult drama, about problems life gives you as a parent, and the relationships throughout.

“It’s a good mix of comedy and drama,” she said.

Junior Tony Dahl has been watching Hawaii Five-O for a while. He likes the show, but mainly watches it because his girlfriend loves it.

“My girlfriend makes me watch it with her,” Dahl said.

Stranger Things is Senior Callie Stumpfl’s go-to. She likes the uniqueness of the show.

“I like Stranger Things because it’s different than every typical show and I like how the sci-fi is a different kind of show to watch.”

A lot of people are suckers for a hospital drama, including Junior Alana Hartman. It grabs her attention and never gets old.

“I like Grey’s Anatomy,” Hartman said. ”It keeps me watching, I never get bored of it.”

Everyone has different likings towards different shows. Drama, action, comedy, and romance are the most popular choices. Which show is your favorite?

Is Dating in High School Worth it? https://www.hoofprint.net/is-dating-in-high-school-worth-it-2/2019/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=is-dating-in-high-school-worth-it-2 Tue, 05 Mar 2019 18:56:02 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=23621 Dating in high school is always a controversial topic. Is it better to give it a shot if the opportunity is there, or is it more important to focus on yourself and your priorities?

Studies have shown that only 2% of relationships made in high school last long enough for the couple to end up being married. Many of these relationships have high hopes but usually end up not going far.

So, is dating in high school worth it?

“For some people it is,” said World Studies Teacher Tracy Hulley. “And for others it just isn’t necessary.”

Sophomore Gavin Leaver is against dating.

“No, it’s not worth it, because people are still immature,” Leaver said.

History teacher Mike Curry thinks dating can be very valuable, even if it doesn’t lead to lifelong relationships.

“It teaches us all the skills we will need later in life: communication, how to treat people,” Curry said. “If you don’t learn it now, then you need to learn it later and then you could mess up at the wrong time. Is it necessary? No, but it teaches you good life skills.”

Senior Grace West put a meaningful thought towards dating in highschool.
“You never know when you’re going to find the right person,” West said. “It could be right now.”

Are there any benefits to dating in high school, even if the relationship doesn’t last?

“Yes,” said Junior Justin Ellis. To make new connections with people and go through different relationships with people can help you through life.”

“Dating is high school is totally fine,” Junior Dalton Curtis said, “and you get to know your type.”

Senior Tristan Eull made a point about reflecting on the emotions behind a relationship.  He wonders what the intentions of the relationship is.

“Is it lust or love?” Eull asked.

Students already in a relationship may be more likely to believe that high school relationships are worthwhile.

“I have a girlfriend, so I think it’s worth it,” Junior Trevor Johnson said.

Mr. Davison thinks it can be well worth it. He is a part of the 2% that found a lasting relationship in high school.

“Well that’s how I found my beloved,” Davison said.“Since the end of  9th grade. So yes, it can be worth it. As long as there’s no drama.”

Some people don’t need to date in high school.

“I don’t care,” Senior Travis Bradford said.

Senior Lily Ragab has traveled around the world in her life. Her experience has influenced her thoughts on the idea of a soulmate.

“The world is so big,” Ragab said.“There are 154 counties and 7 billion people in the world. Just to find someone in your local town is unrealistic.”

Everyone has different opinions on high school relationships, even students of the same age. If you’re looking for something long term, the data shows that it just isn’t likely to last very long. Depending on your beliefs and goals about what you want out of a relationship, it can be very useful in building characteristics for later in life.

What is BHS’s Favorite Hot Lunch? https://www.hoofprint.net/what-is-bhss-favorite-hot-lunch/2019/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=what-is-bhss-favorite-hot-lunch Fri, 22 Feb 2019 19:06:26 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=23476 71 students at BHS were recently asked what their favorite lunch is. The Cheesy Bread Bites made their debut at the start of this year, and hit it off with many people. They are a resemblance of the beloved Cheese Filled Bread sticks, that are no longer an option.

“I love cheese.”  Junior Mackenzie Holmquist said.”So anything cheese related, I like.”

What is your favorite hot lunch?
43 votes · 43 answers

Mini Corn Dogs were just as popular as the Bread Bites. They have been around for a long time, and are not going out of style.

“I don’t really eat hot lunches…but the Mini Corn Dogs are pretty good.” Senior Cal James added. “And the French Toast Sticks have progressively gotten worse.”

Following closely after those two was the Chicken Alfredo and the newly added Sassy Chicken. The Sassy Chicken is a new lunch this year. It is a spicy sauce tossed onto the chicken, and is popular because of the load of flavor that comes with it. Many people are enjoying it.

“It’s good,” Joe Carothers simply said. “Especially on game days.”

With all of the options for lunch at school, almost every student has a favorite they could go to every day. Now you have heard some of the most popular lunches from other students.
