But no matter what recent studies show, procrastination is unarguably a cause of great stress towards the end of the school year, resulting in failing grades and crushed dreams.  Good luck to those brave, irresponsible souls who have to stay up until 2am working.  You brought it upon your selves.

Who buys a year book anyway? https://www.hoofprint.net/who-buys-a-year-book-anyway/2014/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=who-buys-a-year-book-anyway Thu, 24 Apr 2014 16:41:04 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=17807 Well the answer is just about everybody!  Over two thirds of the school orders yearbooks.  Last year 1250 were sold, and this year the number is already at 1100 and projected to meet or even exceed last year’s sales.

At $75 dollars a pop, you might think that the numbers would be lower.  In fact, cost is the main reason students don’t purchase a year book.  But with over 200 pages and in full color, many argue that the precious memories are worth the price, especially to those who helped create it.  And it’s hard to argue that yearbooks don’t preserve precious memories for years to come.  Whether those memories are good or bad.

Freshman Jim Ostvig says he is going to get one so he will be able to look back at his failures and laugh.   Others wish to look back and feel nostalgic for the past and wallow in the realization that they peaked too early and they will never be that young and free again.  Ahem. Sorry.

Anyways, you would think today with phones that can talk to you and a 16 year old finding the cure to cancer every other day, why would people spend $75 on memories?  I have no idea.  Ask someone more qualified.  Regardless, this year’s yearbook is sure to be a work of art. So pick up an order form from the front office.  Time is running out!

Pep Band Battle https://www.hoofprint.net/pep-band-battle/2014/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=pep-band-battle Fri, 14 Mar 2014 17:25:44 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=17498 Creative Commons

There is one battle that you don’t usually notice when watching the big game.  They’re always there, playing loud and proud, but never cheered for.  Fighting a battle just as important as the game itself.  The battle of the pep bands.

The pep band provides much needed momentum to the crowd and to the players during games, playing songs such as “The Final Countdown,” “Smoke on the Water,” and our school song.  And this year they had a rare opportunity-to play against another band at a state level competition.

I talked to Freshman Matt Fenton, who played the tenor sax during Wednesday’s game.  “It was a wonderful experience even though we lost the game.” he said.    And even after losing to Lakeside North, it’s hard to claim that they beat us in spirit.  We had one of the biggest pep bands we’ve ever had at a game, and a massive student presence- especially compared to Lakeside’s band and student presence.  I think we can claim we won a moral victory however corny and cliche that may sound.

It’s a rare occurrence, having a team go to state, but when we  do, you can always count on the pep band to make it a more fun and exciting experience.

Writing a Novel https://www.hoofprint.net/carson-reichhardt/2014/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=carson-reichhardt Wed, 05 Mar 2014 17:07:44 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=17231 Many people aspire to be a writer, but few take the initiative to accomplish that goal.

Writing takes a lot of discipline.  Not all of us can make something great.  Carson Reichardt is one of the few people in BHS who has the love of writing that you need to accomplish something as huge as getting published.

“I had already read all of the books on my bookshelf.  I was bored,”  the Freshman states as his reason for starting to write.  “I’d like to get published and I think that’s a dream all writers share.”

I asked Carson if he had any advice for aspiring authors. “You have to be a perfectionist.  You have to be willing to go over something over and over to make sure it sounds good,”  he said.  “If you don’t constantly try to get better you will never get anywhere.”

Carson has been working on his current project -a thriller novel- for over 2 years and has no plans to stop writing.
