Pegasus becomes UniVerse, releases latest edition https://www.hoofprint.net/pegasus-becomes-universe-releases-latest-edition/2018/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=pegasus-becomes-universe-releases-latest-edition Fri, 25 May 2018 18:15:20 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=22781 The cover of the 2018 UniVerse Literary Magazine
The cover of the 2018 UniVerse Literary Magazine Kaitlin Berg and UniVerse

With a new name and the debut of full-color pages, UniVerse, the literary arts magazine of BHS, launched on Wednesday after school. Copies are currently being distributed around the school.

“No Gentle Trip;” features a cover image by Junior Kaitlin Berg of a crab tipping slightly off a rock and kicks off with a poem by Claire Nelson called “STAND”.

The group of students behind UniVerse worked to feature poetry, art, photography, and prose created by BHS students who wanted to put themselves and their work out there. The group met in Bison Time and after school to work on the magazine. They also hosted open mic nights in the Library Learning Commons which featured students reading their poetry in front of an audience. They also held writing workshops.

Editor-in-Chief Junior Katherine Wagner led the group of students who put the book. She said she spent “easily over 100 hours” working on the magazine. Wagner said she lives and dreams writing as she is working on her own book now.

“I am currently working on my own book too,” Wagner said, “because I love to speaking in and out of poetry.” stated Junior Katherine Wagner.

Make sure to check out their new volume and maybe even try it for yourself once.

Why do you show up for school? https://www.hoofprint.net/why-do-you-show-up-for-school/2018/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=why-do-you-show-up-for-school Wed, 23 May 2018 17:26:30 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=22659 The definition of “Motivates” is to stimulate someone’s interest in or enthusiasm for doing something. When it comes to school, everyone has something different that motivates them to get out of bed, get ready for school, eat breakfast, and leave for school.

From teachers to students, everyone seemed to say that their motivation for school is going way lower due to how close we are getting to summer,  how late they stayed up the night before, or other just a lack of energy.

Students

Freshmen,Sterling Yates: “One, teachers motivate me, along with the atmosphere created by other students. Two, the education presented to us is superb”.

Sophomore, Melanie Linzbach: “If I didn’t have somewhere to go, I’d stay at home not living for anything”.

Junior Samantha Shun: “If I don’t go to school, I would get into trouble with my parents”.

Senior Bailey Braccini: “ I simply go to school for the most simple reasons: grades, and college”.

Asking this question as the years go on it gets harder an harder to motivate yourself to go to school based on how many years you have already been there.

Teachers

Science teacher Jenn Sheedy: “I know that I am gonna make a positive impact, face new challenges, and get to grow and learn each day with my students”.

Journalism teacher Ryan McCallum: “I get so bored at home, so I love coming here. I’ll even come here when I am sick, because it makes me feel better.”

Math teacher Abby Bohler : “I come and teach so I can supply for my cat.”

“OMG I love those!” How shoes become trends https://www.hoofprint.net/omg-i-love-those-how-shoes-become-trends/2018/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=omg-i-love-those-how-shoes-become-trends Mon, 07 May 2018 17:52:54 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=22462 Omg look at those…. I need them!

From Fidget Spinners to Fortnite, fads are constantly changing. Shoes are no exception. What footwear fads are emerging at BHS in 2018?

“I would say the most recent shoe trend is definitely still converse, high or low, black or white, I see different converse every day,” said Audrey Helpi.

Everyone goes through phases, and whatever your friend has obviously your will end up wanting them.

“The most recent shoe trend I would say is the slip-ons girls have them in all different colors”said Jorrie Murray

It all started with Crocs, then it came to Converse high top and low top, then Adidas, Vans, Birkenstocks, and Uggs.

“I personally think my sister has every shoe trend there ever was, and ever will be. Every time they’re out she buys them two to three days after” said Sterling Yates.

Everyone has their own timeline but that’s mine, and it will keep changing. These trends can also switch from boys to girls.

In an informal survey of 35 Buffalo High School students, people were feeling ready for summer, as Birks were the first choice out of Converse, Vans, Birkenstocks, Ugsg, Crocs, Adidas, Slip-ons, Nike, and other.

As Birkenstocks were the winner with 15 votes,Vans trailed in second place with 12 votes, Nike and Adidas had a tie with eight votes, while Slip-ons, and Uggs had zero votes. The other category consisted of one vote for Heelys and another vote for socks and sandals.

It’s amazing to see what the next trends will hold, just like the evolution of phones, and technology, fashion is ever-changing.

Blockers is a movie your parents don’t want you to see… https://www.hoofprint.net/blockers-is-a-movie-your-parents-dont-want-you-to-see/2018/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=blockers-is-a-movie-your-parents-dont-want-you-to-see Fri, 13 Apr 2018 17:43:32 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=22397 WARNING
Blockers is a movie your parents might not want you to go to, but that might want you to go to the movie.

Julie, Kayla and Sam are three high school seniors who make a pact to lose their virginity on prom night. Lisa, Mitchell and Hunter are three overprotective parents who flip out when they find out about their daughters’ plans. The parents soon join forces for a wild quest to stop the girls from sealing the deal, no matter what the cost.

Blockers has some sex scenes, but don’t worry you don’t see anything, and this movie has a lot of foul language. There is some violence in this movie to go along with drinking and drugs. However, this movie was so relatable to high school.

I was so excited to go to this movie, the first commercial I watched it caught my attention. I’m just warning you there may be a couple of spoilers in it so brace yourself. This movie couldn’t be any more like high school. This movie made me laugh almost the whole entire time. If I was gonna give this a rating, It would definitely get at least four stars, and I’m getting it as soon as it comes out to purchase. If you haven’t seen it yet you need to. It’s well worth the nine dollars.

Relates to school?

This movie is like high school because they have a Prom to the one we have at BHS and all parents worry once their kids go to prom like the parents did in this movie. This was really well played in this movie and very realistic at some points.

This movie also had a really accurate representation of peer pressure. We know some people drink and how that complicates relationships and decisions related to Prom. They really did a good job on showing how the parents would do literally anything to get to influence their kids.

This movie also had includes the LGBT community fairly. At BHS, we have really tried to make sure everyone feels welcome, regardless of sexuality. In the movie, it was super sweet to see how accepting the friends were one a character “came out”.

What it takes: “Good” Teacher vs. “Good” Student https://www.hoofprint.net/what-it-takes-good-teacher-vs-good-student/2018/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=what-it-takes-good-teacher-vs-good-student Thu, 29 Mar 2018 18:34:27 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=22338 What makes a good teacher? All 30 students who were polled with this question gave different responses.  Everyone had their own ideas about the essential qualities of an ideal educator.

What makes a Good Teacher?

Some students thought a “good” teacher is when they care about their job and students.

“Someone who is passionate about their job and is nice and understanding,” said Kiley

“Someone who is genuine- and need to care about their students and what they do,” said Lauren.

Some students thought it is all about their students succeeding.

“Someone who understands the workload students have, and relates to students so they can succeed,” said Madison

“Someone who cares about their students and seeing them succeed,” said Emily.

Some just want to have fun.

“Making learning fun without getting so sidetracked,” said Devyn.

“Someone who doesn’t just talk at the students but actually makes learning semi-enjoyable”said Isiah

Finally, students liked the teachers who make sure their students understand material.

“One who knows how to actually teach and checks for understanding,” said Dawson.

“A teacher who works hard to help their students understand the material they are learning,” said Caitln.

Good means something different to everyone. So in conclusion “good” meant different things to everyone, but generally meant caring, involved, fun, etc.

Qualities of a Good Student

Teachers were asked the same question and they all gave me their own opinion.

Most teachers thought what made a student “good” is the fact that they are hard working.

“Hard working, on time, and reliable” said Agriculture Teacher Gary Wirkus.

“Hard working, desire to learn, and helpful to others,” said Math Teacher Abby Bohler.

Some teachers thought the “good” students go the extra mile.

“I consider a ‘good’ student to always go the extra mile,” said Tech Ed teacher Troy Hanson.

“A good student to me is always willing to take risks and make mistakes to learn, ”said Social Studies Teacher Brig Bergquist.

“A student that wants to learn and ask questions,” said Math Teacher Casey Mix

“A student that is engaged and loves asking questions,” said Science Teacher Jenn Sheedy

“Somebody who takes owner ship of their weakness and destroys their weakness,” said  English Teacher Joe Pokorney.

Ballin through the years https://www.hoofprint.net/ballin-through-the-years/2018/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=ballin-through-the-years Thu, 22 Mar 2018 18:05:55 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=22216 Everything’s changed over time: technology, taxes, gas prices, etc. But what about your hobbies? I asked a recent high school graduate, Michael Beasley, and freshmen, Sterling Yates, just to see how sports changed in a little bit of time.

Sports literally take up a huge part of an athlete’s life.

“Monday through Friday games were mostly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays,” said Yates.

Coming from another point of view, Michael Beasley’s schedule was different.

“I had practice from Monday through Thursday. Games always varied, I even had some on them on weekends,” said Beasley.

Some student athletes fully commit to their sport for years.

“I was in it since kindergarten,” said Yates.

Its crazy to see how long these athletes have been committed.

“I was in it for 14 years,” said Beasley.

Sports would be nothing without coaches.

“My coach was Sorenson,” said Beasley.

Not all coaches are adults, especially for the freshman boys basketball team.

“Kyle Ewer is my coach,” said Yates.

Sometimes athletes don’t want to talk about the stats.

“We won about five games, and we don’t talk about the rest,” said Yates.

Basketball has had a good record over time.

“We always finished in the top two in the conference,” said Beasley.

Everyone has different favorite things in regards to practices and games.

“I loved game days! I always loved giving it your all to win the game,” said Beasley

Yates was a little more specific.

“Rebounding has always been my favorite part of the game but scoring is pretty fun to,” smirked Yates.

With the season ending, they both took away different things.

“My favorite thing about basketball was the friendships that were made from it. We all got along great after practice and it was a great group of guys,” said Beasley.

Yates loved the atmosphere of the tight games

“I enjoyed the close games we had, especially when the crowd got involved. It was the greatest!” said Yates.

Taking all these quotes and stories, sports really have changed. Not only with the coaches and players, but with everything else such as plays, strategies, team bonding, effort, commitment, etc.

Game day over GPA https://www.hoofprint.net/game-day-over-gpa/2018/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=game-day-over-gpa Tue, 13 Mar 2018 18:16:56 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=22039 Sports play a major role in a majority of people’s lives. Many of us in high school question “How much is too much?” I asked Juniors Alex Eurle and Sam Porschal along with Sophomore Samuel Lund that very question and found out some very interesting information on how sports affect your grades and if coaches care about our academics.

Being in sports takes a lot of time and a lot of effort away from your academics. Many people have different viewpoints as to how it truly affects your overall grade. “Yes, I think it helps your academics because it teaches you team bonding, discipline, and creates great friendships,” Junior Sam Porschal said.

Alex knew it was easy for her to keep up with academics.

“It was super easy to keep up with my academics,” Junior Alex Eurle said.

Grades play a huge role, but not for Sam. He manages his time really well.

Sophomore Samuel Lund went on to say “My grades have not changed because of sports. I do everything I can to make them stay the same.” Based off of these results from the interviewees, sports do not have a major role on your academic ranking.

Many people believe that coaches are just coaching for a small paycheck to get them by and don’t truly care about their academics, but Sam Porschal had a completely different thought of that.

“I believe that coaches try to value academics and the importance of it,” Junior Sam Porschal said.

Teammates are also fellow classmates that really care about you and your grade.

“The girls I played with are all smart and cared about school so the coach didn’t need to,” Junior Alex Eurle emphasized.

Bringing the coaches back into perspective Sam Lund had a different perspective.

“I do think coaches care. I’ve asked for help from coaches many times and they always understand my circumstance,” Junior Sam Porschal said

In conclusion, sports do not truly affect your grades. You put the same effort in regardless of how many sports you play.
