One teacher mysteriously did not return. Our mixing spoon and long-tenured teacher Mary Bremmer did not come back to teach.

Many students and staff questioned where our beloved teacher had gone. Many rumors and questions had been asked. Is she okay? Did she retire? Is she really sick?

“I thought she would be back in a few days or a week,” said Senior Dylan Kumlin

Students thought it was just a minor leave of absence. A lot of students and staff were very worried about Bremmer at this point. It has now been a whole quarter without Mrs. Bremmer. The mystery still continues on where Bremmer may be.

Senior Cassie Bunkers said, “Does she have a serious illness. Does anybody know where she is?”

“It is all being kept under wraps, no one is allowed to know where Bremmer is,” said Teacher Kurt Konsela.

No one should worry!

BHS principal Mrs. Thompson said, “Mary Bremmer is happily retired. She has finished her requirements to retire, we are grateful for her years of service.”

Her picture is going to be put up on the wall in the Bison Room along with all the teachers that have retired from Buffalo High School.

Counting down to Spring Break https://www.hoofprint.net/counting-down-to-spring-break/2014/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=counting-down-to-spring-break Fri, 14 Mar 2014 15:58:17 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=17539 With spring break coming up and students eagerly waiting for the end of third quarter the stress is settling in. Some students are graduating early. Some are stressing they have one more quarter left. Spring break always seems to be a good separator for these finals days.

Many students have spring break planned months before it even comes up! This is the big week for some. Where to go this year? Florida, South Padre, Mexico, Arizona?

Senior Madi Reitz is going to Orlando, Florida with her friend Chelsey Henson.  The Henson family own’s a time share in Orlando and go there every year.

“I am most looking forward to the stress relief and laying on the beach.” Said Reitz

Senior Cassie Bunkers is going to Playa Del Carmen Mexico with her family members, her mom, dad, and sister.

Bunkers said, “I am excited to just lay on the beach instead of this negative 23 degree below weather, and having my phone turned off to escape from reality.”

Some students are just staying home. Either working a few hours, maybe spending time with family and just relaxing in their own bed, sounds like a great break to them.

The beach seems to be what most students look forward to. It is soothing and relaxing for those who have been stressing about scholarships, college, ending high school and what the future is going to hold.

Anderle puts college on hold to pursue hockey career https://www.hoofprint.net/anderle-puts-college-on-hold-to-pursue-hockey-career/2014/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=anderle-puts-college-on-hold-to-pursue-hockey-career Thu, 27 Feb 2014 17:41:36 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=17235 The Boys’ Buffalo hockey team played their final game on Tuesday, February 18. The seniors were heartbroken. The feeling had sunk in. For Senior Wilson Anderle there was no way this could be the end.

Anderle had made plans to go to college at Mankato State University. He applied at the college in the fall, and was accepted in the winter of this year. After he found out he was accepted, he had to choose between a few schools, but he decided on Mankato. He then started applying for housing and had all the details figured out for going to Mankato. He was going to pursue a career in sports management.

“I feel so empty, I have been playing for 16 years, this can’t be the end of playing hockey,” said Anderle. “I don’t want to be done.”

Anderle has decided to drop every detail and pursuit of college in order to play hockey for a while longer.

Anderle said, “I am going to play hockey as far as it takes me.”

He is going to be working out, skating everyday with a fellow teammate, and trying out for some Junior league teams. He is hoping to be on a Junior Tier 2 or Junior Tier 3 team.

“Somewhere in Minnesota would be nice but I am willing to go anywhere.” Anderle said.

Healthy ala carte items cost nearly double other options https://www.hoofprint.net/healthy-ala-carte-items-cost-nearly-double-other-options/2014/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=healthy-ala-carte-items-cost-nearly-double-other-options Mon, 24 Feb 2014 17:29:24 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=17130 food
Apples with caramel cost twice as much as a bag of chips in the ala carte line. Would a pricing adjustment change eating habits for students?

Once your lunch tray is empty it’s time for extras. Making the choice for deliciousness isn’t always that simple. Chips $0.75 cents or apples with caramel for a $1.50. What about cookies for $0.65 cents, or fruit with dip for a $1.50. Why is unhealthy food less expensive than healthier food? Is it easier for students to choose the unhealthier items because it costs less?

In the ala carte section at Buffalo High School healthier foods such as fruits and veggies cost as much as $.85 cents more than some of the unhealthier food options. The costs difference is around the same in the real world, like at grocery stores and convenience stores.

Lunch Lady Lisa Dohrmann said, “It’s the decisions you have to make, at the store the healthier food is going to cost more, just like it does here.”

But if the prices for healthier foods went down would that be an incentive to students to choose the healthier items?

“If the fruit was $.65 cents and the chips a $1.50, oh yeah, it would be a quick and easy decision to go with the healthier food,” said Senior Cassie Bunkers.

Senior Bailey Veches said, “Although it is my parents’ money, not mine, I still think I would choose the healthier food because it costs less and I know its better for me.”

Could dropping the price in healthier foods in the ala carte line change your habits?

Trouble is headed to women’s ice hockey https://www.hoofprint.net/trouble-is-headed-to-womens-ice-hockey/2014/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=trouble-is-headed-to-womens-ice-hockey https://www.hoofprint.net/trouble-is-headed-to-womens-ice-hockey/2014/#comments Fri, 14 Feb 2014 17:41:29 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=17046 With the 2014 Winter Olympics starting up, controversy arises with competition. Women’s Hockey was made an Olympic sport in 1998 and was first played in the Nagano Winter Olympics. Women’s hockey has been an Olympic sport for only 16 years and now, there is conversation about taking the sport out.

Team Canada and team USA are two of the favorites to win gold in men’s Olympic ice hockey in Sochi, but there are a handful of teams that could win it all.

That can’t be said for women’s Olympic hockey. It’s only the USA and Canada, no one else. They have been the dominant leaders, being the only two to capture gold since women’s hockey was added as an Olympic sport.

Junior Kendra Carlson, a BHS girls’ hockey goalie, said, “I would be pissed off if they take it out, that is all that girls look forward to because there is no NHL for girls.”

“The Olympics are as far as women hockey players can go,” said BHS girls hockey player junior Kirsten Olson. “Us younger hockey players look forward to watching the girls play in the greatest competition on Earth.”

What could be a way to turn this competition to a more maximized amount?

Teacher Kurt Konsela said, “The colleges in the United States and Canada should try to recruit more players from overseas to get the competition levels going in other countries.”

What’s different with this year’s seniors? https://www.hoofprint.net/whats-different-with-this-years-seniors/2014/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=whats-different-with-this-years-seniors Mon, 10 Feb 2014 20:18:39 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=16920 During fourth quarter, seniors get their senior privileges, including the ability to leave school during AAA and participate in the senior breakfast. One last opportunity is  graduating one quarter early from high school. The amount of students who choose this option is usually between 20 and 30 students. These students have to have all their credits done, not too many tardies or unexcused absences.

This year seems to be different. As of right now only six students have chosen to graduate early. Many choose to stay because they want to finish out the year with their classmates. Students who decide to graduate early cannot return to the building until graduation.

Senior Bailey Veches, one of the six who decided to graduate early, said, “I need to work more to save up money for college.”

This seems to be the most common reason for graduating early.

Senior Abby Strehlow said just about the same thing, “I’m graduating early because I want to make more money for when I go to college.”

“I don’t mind students leaving early, but I think they should have a minimum GPA of 3.0 with a maximum of unexcused absences and tardies,” said teacher Kurt Konsela.

But why is it such a minimal number compared to the past years?

“It is very common for kids to come in and finalize their papers around this time,” said Councilor Mrs. Zimmer, “There could be more kids coming to finalize papers soon.”

Students who may have all the requirements still decide not to graduate early, senior Cassie Bunkers said, “I am deciding not to graduate early because I’m in CIS Chemistry, and CIS woods and I want to stay for the college credits.”

Early graduating seems to be more of a common choice by seniors in the past years but, this year may be different.

FFA: Going hard all Summer https://www.hoofprint.net/going-hard-all-summer/2013/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=going-hard-all-summer Sun, 09 Jun 2013 17:45:21 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=16173 Its the end of the school year, everything is coming to an end. The sports, the grades, and the long hours sitting in the classroom. But some organizations are given ‘er full tots. FFA still goes through the whole summer. The fair is one of the most favorited activities still to come this year!

“My favorite time of the year is showing horses at the fairs and helping at the FFA barn, petting area,” said Junior Katie Manz.

The summer is packed with camps, retreats, and all sorts of fun filled adventures. Fitting stuff in, in the summer is very hard for our BHS teacher and FFA advisor Kari Stai. She has a part time job along with the FFA crazy packed summer.

“The first summer activity is an officer retreat, this year we have 8 officers and we go and learn all about being a leader and go swimming, eat dinner and all kinds of fun stuff for one week,” said Stai.

One of our BHS seniors, Andrew Krause, is the first Minnesota state FFA officers in 12 years. He will be busy the whole summer.

“I am at every camp, retreat, and any FFA activity going on in Minnesota. At one time I will be going for 30 days straight, not including the fairs, County and State,” said Krause.

Guidlines for Freshmen https://www.hoofprint.net/guidlines-for-freshmen/2013/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=guidlines-for-freshmen Tue, 21 May 2013 18:16:21 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=15952

Everyone makes mistakes, but you don’t have to learn from your own! Most people would love to go back in time and change some of the things they did. Most people would go back to freshmen their freshman year and change some of the things they did. A lot of people want to help make it easier for freshmen by giving them some advice.

Everyone has made choices that they are not proud of. Thinking of what would be the better choice is hard, however it is important to put extra thought into your decisions.

”I would have made wiser choices,” said Sophomore Sammie Burandt.

Don’t go into High School thinking you have your friends picked out and the best friends by your side. Its about meeting new people and getting yourself out there. Sometimes your friends just don’t stay true to you. There is a lot of backstabbing and turning your back on those who you thought were your closest friends.

“Make sure you know your true friends because things happen,” said Freshmen Paul Bjork

Freshman classes are relatively easy starting classes, so starting with harder more advanced classes would be a better way to start. Also during your senior year you will not have to take harder classes and be able to take more electives.

“Take harder classes your freshman year,” said Junior Donnie Lind

Freshmen don’t know what to expect when they come to highschool for the first time. Watching tv doesn’t help when they show just the drama and violence at schools.

”It’s not like on TV, you don’t know what to expect,” said Junior Maverick Flesher
