Many ideas on becoming famous are unique and personal to people and then there are the common ideas of wanting to play in the NBA and be a celebrity on social media.

Junior Alex Beckman could see himself being a Rap artist

“I’ve always been a really good rapper with dank raps,” Beckman said.

Junior Kaden Stubstad sees himself becoming a famous lawyer. Becoming one of the famous lawyers is his dream.

“I see myself taking down the famous criminals in court,” Stubstad said.

“Probably a fashion model cause that would be really cool to get payed a lot of money to dress up and look good,” said Junior Lauren Zweifel

Junior Brandon Maatz said he will be the first NBA player to win a Nobel Prize.

“I like to play basketball and I’m really interested in science experiments,” Maatz said, “so it would be cool to be a famous athlete and scientist.”

Widely known parking lot attendant Aaron Starry had this to say when asked how he thought he’d become famous?

“I’m really into fishing, especially pan fishing so maybe winning a big pan fishing tournament,” said Starry.

Blade Goding has had a big passion for dirt bike racing for his whole life.

“It’d be really cool to be a professional Dirt bike racer, racing with all of the professionals”,said Goding.

This goes to show that a lot of people have some pretty unique ideas about what they’d want to be if they were to become famous. What is your goal for when you want to be older, and would that be the thing you’d want to be famous for?

Legend of the Sub: LeRoy Erickson https://www.hoofprint.net/legend-of-the-sub-leroy-erickson/2019/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=legend-of-the-sub-leroy-erickson Mon, 03 Jun 2019 18:23:22 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=24864 Leroy Erickson. You know the name. Erickson is a widely known substitute teacher at Buffalo High School. He is a fan favorite for most students due to his friendly, down-to-earth persona. Students say he makes the time to get to know them when he is leading classes.

With that being said, BHS students shared their thoughts about the Legend himself.

“He’s chill,” Sophomore Camden Hegna said. “He’s super nice and kind. He’s a very helpful guy.”

Junior Carter Jerde also enjoyed having Erickson as a sub.

“He’s a beauty, very intelligent man,” Jerde said. “He’s a great sub and teacher. He really helps us learn.”

Kaden Stubstad, Junior, had a very positive input about Erickson.

“I love him,” Stubstad said. “Every time I see that he’s my sub, my spirits go up. It makes me happier. Not only is he a good sub, but he’s also a good man.”

Erickson reflected on his past as well. He was a teacher at BHS for 40 years. He taught sociology and world studies and was also a basketball and baseball coach. He still coaches football to this day.

Erickson started subbing right after his teaching career ended. He retired in spring of 2008 and began subbing in fall of 2008. Not much of a break for Erickson.

“I started subbing because school has always been a good place to go,” Erickson said. “I like being a part of it. The students are fun and idealistic. I had a lot of teacher friends too. I enjoy it.”

For Erickson, the thing he enjoys most about subbing is the interaction with the different people and classes he teaches.

“Subbing is a diversity,” Erickson said. “Rather than teaching one class, I get to teach in different areas, and see how teachers work with different kids. I learn something every day.”

He has substituted for every subject except band and choir. He liked subbing social studies and physical education the most, but his favorite is American and World History. “That’s where I can find out things about the past and connect them to today,” he said.

As stated earlier, he still coaches ninth grade football. He got into football because he’s always been a fan of the game. He played football at Augsburg University and keeps his knowledge for his ninth graders.

“I played in college. I’ve always enjoyed the sport. The camaraderie you gain is awesome,” he said. “You gain respect for the people who kick the crap out of ya.”

He also loves the strategy behind football. Making and calling plays is a great pleasure to him.

“I like designing plays. I was a defensive coordinator here (at BHS) for 35 years,” he said. “I like the strategy. I also love seeing the kids grow. Telling them to do something and then they go do it, is awesome to me.”

Mr. Erickson is a very popular man among the people of Buffalo, especially in athletics and teaching. The impact he’s left, and the joy he still brings to everyone is remarkable. With this school year marking the 50th year with Erickson teaching in some form some might wonder when he’s gonna give it up, let’s hope he never does and keeps bringing a smile to kids faces as the legendary sub.

Riley Habisch: Bison Hall of Famer https://www.hoofprint.net/riley-habisch-bison-hall-of-famer/2019/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=riley-habisch-bison-hall-of-famer Thu, 23 May 2019 17:26:46 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=24743 Riley Habisch and Sarah Burke were recently inducted into the Buffalo High School Hall of Fame. For Habisch, his hard work in the classroom and character have led him to receive this award.

Every year the Buffalo High School picks five boy nominees and five girl nominees for the Hall of Fame. BHS Teachers then vote for one boy and one girl to be in the hall of fame of Buffalo High School and get their pictures on the wall in the front entrance forever.

“To get nominated, I just had to be myself,” Habisch said. “I didn’t specifically change myself for the award. I was just a good student and good person.”

Being announced as a candidate, and ultimately winning the prized award, was a very special moment for Habisch.

“I was pretty honored to be announced,” Habisch said. “Being with all those other candidates was cool. They’re all great people.”

Habisch did not expect to be nominated for the award, let alone to win it.

“I didn’t know if I would get it,” he said. “There was a lot of people out there doing great things. I was just happy to be nominated.”

A lot of people are great students, and even better people. But being even more than that, is what this award recognizes. Riley had some great advice for the next class to come.

“All of the other winners and candidates were hardworking people,” Habisch said. “I mean, find your passion, work hard at it, and have fun with it.”

Those three steps to success can lead to great things. Riley Habisch (and Sarah Burke) have clearly done both. That’s why they were chosen the two most fit to represent this award.

Did Removing Bathroom Doors Fix Vaping Problem? https://www.hoofprint.net/did-removing-bathroom-doors-fix-vaping-problem/2019/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=did-removing-bathroom-doors-fix-vaping-problem https://www.hoofprint.net/did-removing-bathroom-doors-fix-vaping-problem/2019/#comments Fri, 19 Apr 2019 18:05:19 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=24295 To stop people from making bad decisions like vaping in the bathroom, Buffalo High School recently took the entry doors to all student bathrooms off. This decision has been very controversial around the school, with some students and teachers applauding it and others rallying against it.

Junior Kaden Stubstad hasn’t seen a change.

“Every single time I’m in there I see at least one person vaping,”  Stubstad said.

Junior Carter Jerde agrees.

“No, it hasn’t worked,” Jerde said. “It doesn’t stop the addiction.”

Read more: What are students doing about the decision to remove the doors?

Junior Michael Tweten thinks it is making improvements.

“No, it hasn’t worked,” he said. “But it helps.”

“It hasn’t helped,” Freshman Evan Soefker said, “because there’s still eight people gathered around doing it when I go to the bathroom.”

Other students believe it has helped the cause.

Junior Nicole Odeen said, “Yes [it has helped]. Because you can’t hear the door open, so you have less time to hide it.”

“Yes,” said Sophomore Matthew Henson, “but it feels weird when teachers walk in while your urinating.”

So, did taking off the restroom doors stop the vaping problem?

A Football Life: Aidan Bouman https://www.hoofprint.net/a-football-life-aidan-bouman/2019/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=a-football-life-aidan-bouman Thu, 28 Mar 2019 17:40:28 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=24195 Since Aidan Bouman could remember, he’s had a certain passion about football that he couldn’t replace with anything else in life. As a child, Bouman remembers watching his dad, Todd Bouman, play in the NFL and wanting to be like his dad.

After his dad retired in 2010, Aidan’s would eventually put down roots in Buffalo.

In his first game, Aidan started as the varsity quarterback as a freshman, filling in for the starter who was suspended for the first game. He threw six touchdown passes that game and was promoted to starter for rest of the season.

“It was a really fun game to be a part of,” Bouman said. “Everyone doing their job making everyone else on the team better.”

Bouman would go on to having a strong sophomore season, throwing 2141 yards with 16 touchdowns as he started to catch the eyes of college scouts. In the summer before his junior year, Aidan verbally committed to play at Iowa State.

“I knew that it was the right place right away,” Bouman said. “I just felt it. They made me their number one priority right away and I felt at home. They are honest and I never had to guess how they felt about me.”

Bouman’s junior season was electrifying, with him racking up a whopping 2974 passing yards and more than doubling his touchdown passes with 35, while only throwing 6 interceptions.

When asked how big of an impact his dad had on his football career, Aidan said, “He taught me everything I know in regard to learning the game. He’s pushed me to be where I am today and has always been my biggest supporter.”

Bouman will be returning to the Bison for one more season in the fall hoping to add to his legacy.

BHS Students favorite Teacher? https://www.hoofprint.net/bhs-students-favorite-teacher/2019/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=bhs-students-favorite-teacher Fri, 15 Mar 2019 18:23:02 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=23769 A recent poll was taken around Buffalo High School asking who peoples  favorite teacher was. The results are more surprising than you think Did your favorite teacher get mentioned?

I asked 50 students around BHS and got a bunch of different choices and not having any teacher come out as a clear choice. Getting a lot different reasons why that teacher was their favorite. Some of the most favorite reasons being when the teacher treated them fairly.

“Mr. Swanson was my favorite,” said Junior Julia McAlpin. “He’s super compassionate towards his job and cares about everyone.”

Most people choose their favorite teacher because they connect with students and knew their curriculum, not just because they are laid back and let them go on their phones.

“Nickelson was my fav,” said Junior Jenna Palmer. “She’s really nice and knew that every student learns in different ways. She was the best Spanish teacher I’ve had yet.”

One of the few more popular choices was Woods Teacher Kurt Konsela. The most popular reason for students to choose Konsela is for his understanding that students have lives outside of school.

“I’d say Konsela,” Sophomore Emma Loch said. He’s funny and he doesn’t just focus on your wood project. He teaches life lessons and is very approachable to talk to for being a teacher.”

Another more popular teacher was Art Teacher Jon Gunderson who also teaches drivers’ ed.

“I liked Gunderson he’s hilarious, and he knows how to make your time in class enjoyable and makes you wanna go to class,” said Junior Lauren Zweifel.

On average, Americans watch about four hours of TV a day. That is 28 hours a week. For Buffalo High School students, the majority of that time comes from watching shows on Netflix and other streaming services.

All people have different preferences when it comes to watching TV.

Junior Justin Ellis loves the comedy Big Mouth, and Junior Jenna Palmer (and many others) love The Office. Junior Derek Bursch likes Trailer Park Boys, just as the whole football team does.

What is your favorite Netflix Show?

A lot of students also like The Ranch, a comedy about a family on a ranch, hence the name.

“I like The Ranch. It’s good and it’s funny,” Sophomore Matthew Czeck said.

Juniors Tony Dahl and Trevor Johnson also like The Ranch, along with many other shows.

Trevor Johnson and Junior Kaden Stubstad like Friends. It is a comedy about six friends who live in New York City. Some people love it, others hate it and think it is overrated.

“It gives me nostalgia,” Stubstad said. “It’s dumb-funny.”

Counselor Mark Jones likes the British drama Peaky Blinders. His wife is a big fan, so he support her and watches it with her.

“I watch it with my wife,” Jones said. “She likes it.”

Junior Julia McAlpin likes the mature show Parenthood. It is more of an adult drama, about problems life gives you as a parent, and the relationships throughout.

“It’s a good mix of comedy and drama,” she said.

Junior Tony Dahl has been watching Hawaii Five-O for a while. He likes the show, but mainly watches it because his girlfriend loves it.

“My girlfriend makes me watch it with her,” Dahl said.

Stranger Things is Senior Callie Stumpfl’s go-to. She likes the uniqueness of the show.

“I like Stranger Things because it’s different than every typical show and I like how the sci-fi is a different kind of show to watch.”

A lot of people are suckers for a hospital drama, including Junior Alana Hartman. It grabs her attention and never gets old.

“I like Grey’s Anatomy,” Hartman said. ”It keeps me watching, I never get bored of it.”

Everyone has different likings towards different shows. Drama, action, comedy, and romance are the most popular choices. Which show is your favorite?
