The test we will probably all end up taking at some point in time. The ACT is a test that is five hours with hundreds of questions, and it probably will affect your further education quite a bit.

Now with this test you will have your test evaluated and scored and so on, we all sorta get the gist of the ACT. Then it will be sent to colleges for them to judge if, with your grades and essay included and some other junk, you are a suitable student for their school. Now say you aren’t the best test taker out of the bunch, and you get a 21. Not a bad score at all, but a college may see that on their admissions and pass it right into the garbage. Now how fair is it that you did good in school and all that, but because on one test you didn’t do too hot so now colleges may not consider accepting you. All your hard work that could possibly be knocked down by a test.

“Yeah, I’m 50% Japanese and I didn’t score in the high 30’s… You tell me if there’s something wrong with this test.” Said Junior Reed Morehouse.

Sure we could make the argument that it’s a good way for colleges to see your overall knowledge and all that jazz. But is it really? Is it really a good way to look at peoples over all knowledge when they are sitting in a room for five hours testing on multiple subjects, and pressured to finish each section on time.

“I don’t think the ACT is a good judgement of someones intelligence because In my opinion all the ACT measures is your ability to retell information you have previously heard and we might as well be playing memory if thats the case.” Said Junior Maverick Flesher.

So for the kids who do score in the 30’s, then congrats because you are probably in the top percentile of your school. But in my high school experiences I have seen many hard working students, who are very smart, receive around say a 21 on the ACT. Once again, not a bad score but to higher Universities it probably won’t be looked at as a strong positive.

Werner Takes on Knutsen in the Blazin Challenge https://www.hoofprint.net/werner-takes-on-knutsen-in-the-blazin-challenge/2014/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=werner-takes-on-knutsen-in-the-blazin-challenge Thu, 05 Jun 2014 16:42:29 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=18340 As the track season came to a close, junior athlete Dan Werner wasn’t quite ready to call it quits. With one more goal in mind, Werner challenged his distance coach — Dave Knutsen — to the blazin challenge.

The guidelines for the challenge are as follows:

1. You must first sign a waver, with parental consent
2. You are given six minutes to eat 12 of Buffalo Wild Wings’ hottest wings
3. there cannot be any wiping of the face or fingers throughout the challenge
4. no drinking any beverage
5. all the meat must be off the bones
6. have fun

The Perfect Spots https://www.hoofprint.net/the-perfect-spots/2014/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-perfect-spots Thu, 08 May 2014 17:10:57 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=18062 Those four unknown parking spots in the student parking lot. Those tempting front row spots that have no handicap or visitor parking signs. The dream spot for your ride. Just a short little walk into and out of the school and none of that parking lot chaos. The ones that are always empty, but everyone is too scared to park in them. Why are they always open, as I recall we have never been told we can not park there, but you may not want to start.

“Those spots are mainly used for school events. We have those spots and there are constantly people pulling up and picking people up all the time. Or like a basketball game or something in the gym they use those spots almost as a pull in instead of having all the cars pulling aside the curb and causing a traffic jam, people are in and out of those spots all the time.” Said Principal Mark Mischke “As for students parking there (during the school day) on a regular bases, I wouldn’t recommend it.”

Some students have tried the risk to see what would happen but they don’t have too much success.

“Yeah I parked there one day and they didn’t like that too much,” said Senior Casey Anderson. “They told me to move it and if I park there again they will boot my car.”

There are some exceptions to using the parking spots during the day, such as if you have an injury but no handicap sticker, than you may be allowed to park there if you need a shorter walk.

“We kind of use them flexibly and with 1800 kids we’re always going to have something unique like that,” said Mischke.

Prom Security https://www.hoofprint.net/prom-security/2014/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=prom-security Mon, 21 Apr 2014 16:54:16 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=17865 Rumors of prom security have been spreading like wildfire throughout this school. Words like “Airport security” are being tossed around left and right. In an earlier hoofprint story on the snow daze dance Activities Director Tom Bauman mentioned this, “Kids get that we are really tight at prom, almost like you are going through an airport.”

The truth on the security is that there really is no truth to it. Our school does not control the activity of the law enforcement of the venue. The police department in that area are in control of the security part. Our administration can search purses and busses and do simple procedures as such to prevent tobacco, alcohol, and weapons being brought into the dance and pull aside any persons under suspicion. That student will be dealt with accordingly by our administration and the law enforcement on hand if need be.

As for everyone getting breathalyzed and searched, that doesn’t seem to be the case so everyone can stop spreading the crazy rumors. The Medina police may breathalyze you or search you if they have probable cause. Buffalo Administration has said they haven’t had many problems in the past at prom and don’t expect there to be any difference this year.

“Kids usually behave and don’t typically drink before hand because of all the money that is put into the night,” said Assistant Principal Kris Thompson.

Something you may want to pay attention to is the after party. Buffalo Police will know that May 3rd is the night of prom. So stay safe and have fun.

Buffalo High School Goes On Air https://www.hoofprint.net/buffalo-high-school-goes-on-air/2014/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=buffalo-high-school-goes-on-air Wed, 16 Apr 2014 17:16:57 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=17744 Buffalo High School students will be joining up with KRWC 1360 A.M. to discuss a wide variety of topics that relate to the school or just the community in general from a viewpoint of a student. The students will be from Mr.McCallums Journalism 2 class. They will be starting to put parts together for the show which will be estimated to start this coming Sunday. This all got started with Senior Tiah Marr.

“I was overnight nannying, and I was sitting in the kitchen thinking about my future and this is something I might want to do. It seems like a great way to learn,” said Marr. “I emailed Joe (KRWC) that night and he said ‘lets do it, come meet with me,’ and so I went and talked to him. It went really well.”

Marr came into her Journalism 2 class the following Monday and announced to the class about the opportunity, and asking if any fellow writers would like to join her on the air.

“I was nervous that nobody would want to do it but they did and it made me really happy that buffalo has people like that, that are willing to put themselves out there,” said Marr. “My goal is just to give the opportunity to learn to buffalo students. Our school is so good with Journalism it would be cool to expand that and create something that hopefully will carry on to future classes.”

One student joining Marr has prior experience with KWRC during a hockey game and is excited to try it again.

“I love the idea, I think its going to be fun,” said Senior Casey Anderson. “I have talked on the radio before and it was super fun so im excited to do it again.”

The Finals Are Coming https://www.hoofprint.net/the-finals-are-coming/2014/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-finals-are-coming Wed, 19 Mar 2014 17:58:45 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=17631 With third quarter coming to an end, teachers are at it again with the finals. One test to recap everything you’ve learned in the past weeks. Whether it be Math, Science, English, or pretty much any other class, you may be finding yourself sitting at a desk tomorrow with a big packet of questions on everything you’ve learned. These tests can help you pull your grade up, or just as easily pull it down. As you walk into classes around the school, you may notice a lot of review days where students crack open their books and get busy.

“I think it’s kind of baloney how teachers decide like ‘oh lets all give them a test on the last day,’” said Junior Jake Huston. “It really sucks and I wish they would at least stagger the days they had tests so it wouldn’t be as stressful. Or just not have finals at all, but then again the whole point of the class is to remember the things you learn…”

Some students feel the pressure of the tests would be less if the teachers were to stagger the days we have finals by subjects. For example possibly, English is Monday, Science Tuesday, Math Wednesday, History Thursday. Other students feel we shouldn’t have them at all, and some like the opportunity to bring their grade up.

“Its a lot of stress to have four finals in one day,” said Junior Cooper Ling. “Obviously unit tests and stuff make sense, but it’s hard to remember things from the very beginning of the quarter and then that affects your final grade.”

Everything You Need To Know For Getting To The Game https://www.hoofprint.net/everything-you-need-to-know-for-getting-to-the-game/2014/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=everything-you-need-to-know-for-getting-to-the-game Mon, 10 Mar 2014 18:55:26 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=17459 With the State basketball tournament coming up on Wednesday the school has put together a fan bus for the students and a modified schedule. Students will be able to get out of school at 12 o’clock and be excused with permission from a parent.

“If students ride the fan bus it is an excused absence if they bring the parent permission slip, which we have the forms [in the lunchroom],” said Principal Mark Mischke. “If they turn in the appropriate information and get their parents signature then it’s an excused absence, but if you ride the fan bus to the game you must ride it back.”

Although, some students plan to be driving to the game. For students that drive, they can also get an excused absence if their parents call in for their child.

“If students drive, they must have their parents call in for it to be an excused absence,” said Mischke. “We would suggest they try to follow the same timeline we follow here, but if a parent does call their kid in earlier or later, thats up to the parent for when they want to excuse them.”

Now obviously not all students will be attending the game. So for students staying behind there will be a modified schedule that will start lunches a half hour earlier and have a slightly longer fourth block.

“For what students miss it depends on the instructor and how many students are in the classroom,” said Mischke. “A lot depends on how many kids go.”

Buffalo will be taking on Lakeville North Wednesday at 2 pm at the Target Center.

Fly, Munti, Fly https://www.hoofprint.net/fly-munti-fly/2014/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=fly-munti-fly Thu, 27 Feb 2014 18:18:05 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=17254 Freshman Joshua Muntifering spends most of his time in the pool. He is a standout swimmer on the Buffalo High School’s swim team with records in multiple events. He even trains in the offseason 6 days a week, racking up to 14.5 hours each week of time spent training for the 2013-2014 season.

“I had a three week break after sections last year, and then I pretty much went right into it and started training for this year,” said Muntifering. “My goal was definitely to make it to state in both of my individual events.”

For the BHS swim team Muntifering was the only swimmer with the times that would put him in state positions at sections. The top two places in sections make it to state, Muntifering was seated Number two in both of his events meaning the other swimmers looked at him as the one to beat in sections.

“It was a lot of pressure at sections this year. People were mostly looking to beat me so they could get second place and go to state. I was pretty much the guy to go after,” said Muntifering. “There was a lot of pressure on me from the team also just because this was basically do it or bust, It was the year to just do it and get to state.”

Muntifering had placed second in his first individual event which would send him to state with a time of 2:01.09, breaking his own school record from last year by two seconds.

“I got sick right after I finished my I.M. because I just went balls out, but It still felt amazing when I saw my time,” said Muntifering. “After I got sick I just went outside to get some cool air, then I started feeling pretty good, and the adrenaline just started pumping.”

Muntifering had to prepare for his next event which would be his 100 backstroke. In which he also placed second in and would be heading to state with a 54.87, once again breaking another old school record of his.

“At state I really just want to have fun. Its my first year going as an individual so it will be cool to get the experience,” said Muntifering. “And this is going to be really hard but my goal is to get top 16 in my 100 back. I’m currently ranked 19th, but im .2 seconds off of 16th.”

Muntifering will be diving into the pool Friday the 27th to start his prelims at the University of Minnesota’s Aquatic Center with fellow teammate and diver Hunter Brings joining him.

What’s The Talk On Minimum Wage? https://www.hoofprint.net/whats-the-talk-on-minimum-wage/2014/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=whats-the-talk-on-minimum-wage Tue, 11 Feb 2014 19:24:58 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=16981 One in four high school students, on average, work. Thats about 3.1 million students over the age of 16. Some do it just for some extra money for gas, going out to eat, movies, ect. Some maybe work to help support their families.

“I work to get money so I can buy things I enjoy,” said Junior Blaze Solberg. “I also can get gas so I can use my car to go places.”

Most high school jobs sit at minimum wage. Currently minimum wage is at $7.25. There is a recent discussion on what minimum wage should be. President Obama in his latest State of the Union Address talked about the wage and where it should be set. He wants to raise it to $10.10 an hour.

“I don’t think raising minimum wage would be a good idea because hours at the stores would be cut for the employees,” said Senior and Subway employee Whitney Nyholm. “The business wouldn’t be making as much money so they would be trying to save as much as they could.”

Dan Mcelroy from Hospitality Minnesota said he believes there should be a differential in minimum wage between High Schoolers and those working to support families.

“I realize that you can’t really support a family only making $7.25 an hour,” said Junior Maverick Flesher, “but I think raising minimum wage would just overall cause problems with higher prices and less money for businesses.”

Some states currently have a higher minimum wage than the federal limit. Such as California at $9.00 an hour. Although in California you will find yourself paying much more for simple items, and the cost of living is higher along with taxes.

Minnesota is still debating on the topic, but for now there are no set raises in Minnesota for minimum wage unless the government changes the federal standard.

Wait wait, who’s better? Goodmanson vs Spetz https://www.hoofprint.net/wait-wait-whos-better-goodmanson-vs-spetz/2014/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=wait-wait-whos-better-goodmanson-vs-spetz Tue, 04 Feb 2014 19:45:48 +0000 https://www.hoofprint.net/?p=16761 Due to a recent Twitter debate, there’s a sudden interest between two star players on rival teams.  Junior Gunnar Goodmanson from Buffalo, and Senior Connor Spetz from STMA. Tweets such as “#TeamGunyy”, and a picture of Spetz taking out Goodmanson in a game saying “wait whos better?” were coming out a few days after the Bison defeated the Knights in a 8-4 with Goodmanson scoring three goals, and Spetz scoring one. Goodmanson is referred around Buffalo as “Mr.Hockey” and “King Gunyy.”

“Spetz has the size and strength on me,” said Goodmanson. “But because of that I was able to use my speed against him and that seemed to work.”

For overall points stats, Goodmanson has 43 total points with 134 shots on goal, and Spetz has 25 points with 113 shots on goal.

The argument could be made that Goodmanson is a forward and Spetz is a defender. So let’s do some comparison to other forwards and defenders. STMA’s leading forward, Mitch Bourgerie, has 21 points. Buffalo’s leading defender, Reed Morehouse, has 18 points. So, in comparison, Goodmanson has 22 more points than STMA’s forward, and Spetz only has 7 more points than Buffalo’s defender. In total Goodmanson has 23 goals and 20 assists, leading Mississippi 8 in points. Spetz has 12 goals and 13 assists.

“I hadn’t heard of who he was before this year and so I don’t know a lot about him. But personally just playing against him twice this year I don’t have much respect for him,” said Goodmanson. “It seemed to me like he thought he was better than everyone else. He’s a good player but being cocky kind of takes that away from him.”

Spetz was asked to comment on the rivalry, but simply responded “I don’t judge.” So with only that comment from Spetz, there isn’t much information from his side besides his stats.

The Bison are currently 14-7-1 with three remaining games . The next home game will be Saturday, February 15, against South St.Paul at 2 pm for the last regular game of the season.
