Seniors haven’t forgot about the loved ones from their class who they have lost to tragic accidents. To show their care for them, the class is doing something nice for them during Graduation and the All Night Grad Party.

Graduation night

Assistant Principal Brandon Prell had said that during graduation, which is at 7:00 P.M. on June 11, there will be two chairs set out for Brandon and Jon in their spot in alphabetical order, and will probably have a cap, gown and picture of the students. On the stage there will be two plants in remembrance of them. After the ceramony, the parents of the two will be getting the plants. Senior Dani Shepard is going to be the speaker for the students of the 2010 class and will be mentioning something about what our school has done for them.

For the All Night Grad Party Senior Ashley Michalko is going to put Brandon Lanie and Jon Kramnic’s pictures in the slide show because they are still part of our class, and still should be able to be remembered for who they were. Doors will open at 10:15 and will be open until 10:30 for the students going. This school will be showing a lot of rememberence for these two boys.

Girls’ Lacrosse takes 2nd at State

On Sunday, May 23, the Girls Lacrosse team made it to State Championship game to play Monticello.  The game started out by Buffalo taking the lead 6-5.  After half-time, Monticello pulled out a tie at 6-6.  Unfortunately, Buffalo fell short and lost 16-9.

“We played really well,” said Senior Monica Shoberg.  “It was unbelievable.  During Monticello’s season, no team scored more than three goals against them.”

Regardless of not winning at State, the Girls Lacrosse team accomplished a lot this season.

“This year, there were 35 of us,” said Shoberg.  “We had enough for two teams.  There was also a huge variety in the ages of the players, so at the beginning of the season, there was some drama.  We all sat down and talked about it and after that, we all got along much better.”

One of the team members, Sophomore Stephanie Catton, was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor. To help support and send their love the team wore ribbons on their jerseys.

Summer Fever

With summer just right around the corner, many students are getting very anxious for the upcoming vacation. Students are traveling all over during break.

“I’m going to North Dakota in July. We’re visiting our grandparents that live there. We go there every year so I’m really excited,” said Junior Kendra Durst.

Other students are traveling a little further than North Dakota. They choose to go to places a little more tropical than the surrounding states of Minnesota.

“I’m going to California in August with my family and my cousin. We’ve been planning this trip for a really long time so I can’t wait. We’re staying at a hotel near Hollywood Boulevard so I’m kind of freakin’ out. I’ve never been there before so it should be awesome,” says Junior Bailee Mackedanz.

Where ever students go, they’re going to be happy that they don’t have to be getting up early and having to sit inside for half the day. Just knowing that it’s summer puts them in a good mood. The countdown has officially begun: 9 days left!

Freshmen are one step closer…

With less than three weeks left of school, we set out to see what the freshmen thought about their first year here at Buffalo High School. Class of 2013 thought that it wasn’t that bad of a year but it just was not what they were expecting, they all had many different thoughts about the year: like using your cell phone in the halls, wearing hats, PDA, clothing choice, and on top of everything they had felt pretty accepted by the upperclassmen. “My favorite class I have taken this year would be Algebra with Ms. Greeley,” said Cody Keesling. Many students said they had great experiences with teachers, about 50% of surveyed students said Greeley was their favorite teacher. As the year passed more and more freshmen realized that they should have done all of their work right away and to have tried keeping up the hard work to get good grades, some students are working hard to catch up in their studies before the end of the year is over so they will not have to retake the classes they worked hard in. “I regret not working as hard as I could have, said Keesling, I could have done a lot better this year if I would have tried harder.”

Thursday, May 20, the Buffalo baseball team hosted Rogers at Bentfield Mills for one of their last season games.  Buffalo won 5 – 3 by the top of the 7th inning.

Throughout the game, Senior Aaron Duske pitched a total of 91 pitches only allowing two walks. Five hits were earned for Rogers off of Duske but in return the Bison got nine.

“It was a relief because we’ve lost a lot of one-run games this year,” said Senior Josh Gaughan. “It felt good to come out on top this time.”

Freshman Ethan Freer was the second baseman and he went 2 for 3 in hitting like teammate Junior Brett Renshaw.  Duske and Renshaw both had doubles to aid to the Bison’s win. Freer made a hard dive to get the final out during the top of the seventh inning securing the team’s win.

Senior Tucker Vogt hit a single to get the game winning run at the bottom of the seventh inning.  “We’re kind of getting hot right now,” said Vogt. “I think we could make a run at sections.”

The team is currently 6-14 with its record. Monday, May 24th is the last season game away at Concordia and section play-offs starts Thursday, May 27th.

Local hip-hop artist Desdamona visits high school English class

Desdamona, a hip-hop artist from Minneapolis, visited Katherine Kunz’s English class on Thursday, May 20 to teach kids about poetry.

“I think it’s important to educate kids because in high school people are trying to find their voices,” said Desdamona. “Writing allows you to learn about yourself even if that happens after writing it. Writing in itself  is a teacher so it’s almost like self-teaching.”

Desdamona began performing through dance as a little girl and was in band and choir through out high school. She found that she didn’t have the same type of outlet in college, but soon found it through poetry and rap.

“I had performed like that once in 9th grade, but not again until college,” said Desdamona. “That was when I really found that outlet. My inspiration comes from my own life experiences or friend’s life experiences.”

Desdamona, a unique name, came from a Shakespeare play. Desdamona’s real name is actually Heather.

“I wanted a name that people would remember,” said Desdamona. “No one else has this one. I chose it because I related to the character. She was killed and didn’t get to tell her story because it was too late. I wanted a chance to tell my story.”

Desdamona’s music can be found on MySpace music and iTunes. She will also be returning to the school on May 26, 27, and 28 to continue to teach about poetry. On the 28 she plans on performing for the class.

While the school year starts to come to the end, Seniors are counting down the days. With 13 days remaining, some seniors are finding it hard to maintain the motivation they had earlier in the year.

“Graduation is something to look forward too. It gives you that feeling that you finally did it and all your hard work finally paid off. We have to wait a long time for this day so it’s worth it in the end but I’m not going to lie, I’m definitely nervous and excited at the same time,” said Senior Savanha Gravening.

When asked, most Seniors agreed that staying out late and hanging out with friends is what they are looking forward to the most.

“I love hanging out with my friends! It’s the best part about summer so I can’t wait until graduation. We spend so much time together out on the lake. I know that I will miss them when I go to college,” said Senior Angelee Hale.

Cap and gowns were distributed May 19th and that’s a key to seniors that graduation is one step closer. Graduation is June 11th at 7 PM in the gym.

On Tuesday, May 18, the 26th annual Nick Miller Academic Luncheon was held at the Evangelical Free Church.  This lucheon is held to recognize all of the hard work of the Presidential Award Recipients put in throughout their high school careers.

Huikko’s catered the event.  There was rice, stir-fry, alfredo, brownies, and lemonade.  The entire luncheon was sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce , which is a group of local businesses that promote one another.

Each of the students were told to tell about what they were looking forward to this upcoming year.

“I’m looking forward to a new environment,” said Senior Sara Rand.

“I’m looking forward to being in the sun year round at Arizona State University,” said Senior Ariel Ehlenz.

Even though all of the answers varied, the most common answer for what would be missed was all of the connections that the students made over the years with teachers and their peers.

JV Boys Tennis

The boys JV tennis season is almost over. With only two weeks left thirteen boys head off to Litchfield for a match on Friday May 14. This season has brought many new players to the JV team.  Junior Nic Berhands is playing this season for his first year along with a few others. Nic says “I’m going to try out next year because it is fun to play and hang out with everyone!” All the boys really like the environment. Junior Andrew Sandahl says “Yeah they are really good, nice people that i am always comfortable around!”

This team is like family and they connect really well. The team looks forward to next year! Hopefully they can make another good impression like they did this year, maybe better. Next year they will be taking over as sophomores, juniors and seniors so they will need to work hard and make a great environment for the freshman that want to join tennis, they will have to be good role models.

Many of the players should set their goals on state next year, as long as they work hard and persevere they can make it, putting in practice could easily move them further in life. Maybe even earn a scholarship for college?

Due to weather conditions a few of the boys matches and practices have been canceled or postponed. The boys last matches are on Tuesday, May 18 away against Elk River High School and Thursday, May 20 home against Saint Francis.
