Three years ago, the Class of 2010 stepped into high school. Everything that they have known for four years at school will be their last, including homecoming. With their last pep rally, final homecoming football game, last dance, and last time to go “all out” for a week, the seniors with to experience the best.

“I want to make the most of it. It’s senior year, this is the last homecoming we’ll get. Hopefully it’s a good one,” said senior Amanda Pederson.

As seniors transition from blue to black, they find humor when they witness their classmates “all decked out.”

“I’m looking forward to seeing all the classes decked out, especially the senior hallway,” said senior Ben Henson.

In school, everyone is against each other in for certain competitions, but all are united for the football game under the Friday night lights.

“I like how even though on Thursday all the classes split up. On Friday we can all come back together for the football game,” said senior Taylor Zook.

Buffalo High School has a lot of school spirit and it is evident through all the students.

As the week of homecoming started there were plenty of seniors that dressed up but some were more dressed up than others. Monday was “Neon Day” and a lot of the school was dressed up. Many students wore just a neon t-shirt but senior Tim Ruter had on a neon skirt.

“I just wanted to look good,” said Ruter, who later won an award for the day.

Tuesday was “JaMakin’ Me Crazy Day,” and not as many students were dressed up, compared with the other days. Seniors Dan Hanson, Kane Nelson, Cody Ling, and Lowell Engle, all dressed up as the Jamaican bobsled team, running around the locker bays with boxes as their bobsled. They all won the dress-up awards.

Wednesday was “Wild Wild West day. People were dressed up in many different styles of country-western outfits, from combinations of cowboy boots and hats to guys wearing short shorts. Not very many students dressed-up on Wednesday but the ones that did looked like real cowboys and cowgirls.

Thursday was “Class Color Day”. It is always a highly anticipated occasion for students. seniors started arriving at the school around 6 o’clock Thursday morning to paint the rock, hang out and have fun. It is a tradition the the seniors have done for years. They then marched the hallways and chanted as the rest of the school looked on. Most likely thinking of the day that they wear all black.

Friday was Bison pride day. The day for the whole school and students to come back together after Thursday’s combat between classes. The hallways were flooded with purple, black and white. Just about everyone in the school had on some purple. As the 7 p.m. game time approached the bleachers at the stadium kept rapidly filling up. At kick-off it was just a wave of purple cheering and screaming. The football team helped add to the homecoming excitement as they beat Monticello 28-0.

To finish out the week there was a fun night after the game until midnight and then on Saturday at 7 there was a dance. There was a lot of students and even some others visiting from other schools. The dance floor was very crowded and hot, but it was filled with memories as the seniors ended their last homecoming.

GMSA, Globally Minded Student Activists, is a group of students that does all kinds of charitable events. The group meets every Friday during Triple A and anyone can join at any time. Feed My Starving Children, which they visited on Monday, September 28, was the first event the group has participated in this year.

As you know, millions of children are starving all around the world. Feed My Starving Children is a program that helps provide nutritious food to hungry boys and girls across the nation who are in need, to end the pain of hunger for children.

The students car pooled with each other To Feed My Starving Children in Chanhassen, Minnesota. English teacher Katie Kunz was the only adult chaperon who went with. They spent an overall hour and a half there, learning about the charity and making meals for young boys and girls.

The group packed an overall 12 boxes that consisted of 9,072 meals in only 45 minutes. Those 9,072 meals will feed about 25 children for a whole year. Each meal costs 17 cents to make, and all the money that pays for all the materials to make the meals is all made from donations.

“Team work was really important for this activity,” said Kunz. “You have to work together to make all the meals and get things done quickly in the time that you have there. It was an affective and efficient experience and I’m really glad i had to opportunity to go.”

Monday, September 28, was the second gathering of FCA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes. A group of around 40 members gathered to Senior Cody Lings’ house at 7:30 to listen to the word of God.
A few songs of gospel started off the night, with Juniors Nina Downer and Michael LaCroix on guitar.
Seniors Kane Nelson, and Erik Star came prepared with a speech of their testimonies.
“I think overall last nights speeches were really good and easy for others to relate to,” says Olivia Haggerty. “Because we were being spoken to from someone of our ages.”
Both came together for the sermon and lesson of the night; scriptures from Romans, Matthew, James and 1 Corinthians were read to complete the sermon for the night.
A youtube.com Lifehouse video followed the speaking of our fellow classmates, Nelson and Star. Ending the night with a word of prayer was Star.

Every Friday morning, 8-10 students from Buffalo High School get in their cars and head to Perkins, a local restaurant and bakery. They arrive at 6:00 and sit down in their regular arrangement; two tables pushed together. Their waitress, Maryanne, heads over to take their order. When Senior Dylan Triplett orders “the usual”, she knows exactly what he wants. He’s been coming to this weekly event since he was in eighth grade.

“There was this one guy,” Triplett remembers. “He would come in the night before, sleep in the booth, and then wake up when the rest of us came at 5.”

perkinsThe Breakfast Club started around ten years ago, but back then it started at 5:00 a.m. This is the first year they’ve set it for later in the morning.

“I go there to carry on the tradition,” says Junior Sami Manick. “And to eat pancakes.”

This group used to be only members of the music department, but over the years it has grown to involve anyone who would like to come. Just show up, you’ll know which corner to come to.

“On the last day of school we go to Perkins at like midnight, and stay awake til school starts,” laughs Triplett. “Then we go play Frisbee golf.”

Friday September 25th was the Homecoming Football Game for the Buffalo Bison. After a long, eventful week at the high school many students were anxious and excited for the game, where they could show off their “purple pride” and school spirit. The game ended in a strong win for the Bison, against the Monticello Magic, with the score being 28-0.

“The game literally ties the whole week together, its great when everyone just piles in to watch it.” said Junior Morgan Lubben.
Lubben along many other students were tailgating in the parking lot before the football game. Various groups were making food such as Homecoming King Billy Ogdahl who could be seen cooking steaks in the rain, while another group sat under a tarp grilling hot dogs.
Hundreds of people were present at the game, equipped with umbrellas after dodging the rain all day. Although the rain stopped just in time for the game to begin. The Pep Band was able to be in attendance, as was the cheer leading squad, all contributing to the atmosphere of the game.
With a pre-game meal of Buffalo Wild Wings the team was ready and anxious for the first kick off at seven o’clock.
“I’m really excited for tonight, it’s all I’ve been able to think about. But, in a way, its kinda sad thinking its my last homecoming game.” said Senior Rex Schneider.

The first points in the game were from Senior Captain Josh Gaughan after his touchdown in the first quarter. This was followed by another touchdown from Sophomore Colton Haight after working his way to the end zone by running through the other teams defensive line. Adding to the score, Gaughan was able to score another touchdown in the second quarter. Towards the end of the third quarter Senior Captain Aaron Duske intercepted a pass, and ran for a touchdown, adding another six points to the score the teams. Throughout the four quarters defense contributed a great amount, having no points scored against them the entire game. This game also contributed to Head Coach Gerard Rohl’s winning record while he’s been at Buffalo High School, that game being his 101 win. With a current record of three wins and one loss for this season the Bison football teams next game will be away, where they will take on the Becker Bulldogs on Friday, October 2nd.

Classes celebrate Class Color Day 2009

Thursday was a very eventful day at BHS. Class color day started at about 6 a.m. as the seniors, all dressed up in black, headed out to the rock that was brought in by the class of 1984. With black and white spray paint in hand the seniors decked out the rock in many significant ways. Some seniors put their names on the rock. Others put items and things that symbolize them and some just painted seniors. They stayed out their until about 7:20 and then they lined up at the doors to march the hallways. As they walked by all the kids stopped and stared at the wave of black. When the seniors got up to the front in the atrium all eyes were on them.

“I was very impressed with the behaviors of our seniors,” Said principle Mark Mischke. “(Class color day) is a unique privilege that most schools don’t do.”

In the atrium the seniors started chanting 20-10, 20-10 and at the end they added a loud “SENIORS.”

The day then went on as any other class color day with the seniors ruling the school and maybe a few freshman shaking in their shoes! That is the point of class color day. It is a day to recognize and roast the seniors as it is their last run and a day to welcome the freshmen to the high school.

Mischke also said that the day went very well because of the leadership of each class and he is looking forward to next year.

2010 – Finally in Black

As you walked though the senior hallway at Buffalo High School on September 24, 2009, a swarm of students in black celebrated being seniors.  Before they reached the senior locker bay, the seniors swarmed at the “rock” to continue a tradition.

Getting at the “rock” around 6:00 a.m. has always been a tradition for seniors.  It’s when they are allowed to celebrate the fact that they are almost done with school and show off their seniority.

“Me and a bunch of friends got up at 5:00 to get ready and go to the rock.  It was so much fun,” said Senior Jackalyn Blauert.

The early arrivers receivedDSC03422(2) chocolate doughnuts from the administration.  Unlike other years, there was a couch there brought by Senior Spencer Berg for the tired seniors to rest on.  Senior Kyle Sandberg waved a flag saying “10″ to represent the 2010 graduating seniors.

The students captured the memories by standing on the painted rock and taking pictures with all their friends.

After all the picture taking was done and other students started arriving the seniors moved to the student parking lot entrances.  Showing of their seniority they cheered on all the other seniors arriving and booed the lower grades.

“It was sad seeing the parents coming in to drop off their kids.  I would feel bad for my kid if I was a parent.  But it was great cheering on all the other seniors,” said Senior Amanda West.

When it was finally ready for school to almost begin, all the seniors gathered at the entrance to the school to get ready for their march through the hallway.  The staff were leery in making sure that the seniors went straight to their locker bay with out tormenting the younger grades.  The seniors obliged and walked through the hall.  Stopping at the atriam the seniors  yelled 2010 showing their excitement.

“Marching through the hallways was a great expirence, because it united us as a class,” said Senior Hannah Gulstad.
